Ocean Pals: Educating the Next Generation of Marine Stewards Across the Globe

Founded under the not-for-profit Beneath the Sea organization in 1986, Ocean Pals was created to help address a critical gap in ocean ecology education for children. While some adults were engaging in Ocean environmental and Habitat issues, there was little being done to instill similar values in our younger generations. Recognizing the importance of educating children about the marine environment, Ocean Pal founders Joann and Armand Zighan, along with the Executive Board of Beneath the Sea, set out to change that.

Ocean Pals is a World-Wide web-based Marine Ecology Club that combines art, reading, and ecological marine sciences to help foster environmental awareness and a deeper understanding and appreciation of our Oceans and its unique creatures.

Through creative lesson plans, storytelling, and hands-on activities, the web-based program engages children in learning about ocean conservation and the importance of protecting marine habitats. By sparking a sense of responsibility for the future of our oceans, Ocean Pals empowers young minds to become environmental stewards.

Today, Ocean Pals reaches children and educators worldwide in places like Anguilla, United States and the Philippines, with a growing number of Schools in global locations around the world joining Ocean Pals at NO COST.

One of the program’s key features is its free downloadable educational materials, which include lesson plans and coloring book-style artwork, available to teachers, parents, and students worldwide at no charge donated by Children’s Book Authors, Artists and other Ocean Pals.

The program’s success is made possible by the dedication of its volunteer staff — administrators, Book Authors, artists, and educators — who work tirelessly to achieve the mission goals. Funding is provided by grants from the Life Support Technologies group, Beneath the Sea Exposition, book sales, and donations.

As Ocean Pals continues to expand its outreach, it is helping to shape a new generation of children who are passionate about marine conservation. The initiative stands as a vital force for ocean awareness, ensuring that young people everywhere learn to appreciate, understand, and protect the world’s marine environments for generations to come.
