New Book Explores Cherokee Nation’s Constitutional Legacy and Cultural Strength
Former Principal Chief Chadwick “Corntassel” Smith has unveiled his latest book, Cherokee Nation: Proceed Undaunted, an in-depth exploration of the Cherokee Nation’s constitutional evolution and the cultural principles that have sustained it through centuries of challenges.
Drawing on his personal experiences and extensive research, Smith chronicles the Nation’s journey from its first written constitution in 1827 to modern amendments that continue to shape its identity. He reflects on key events, including the Trail of Tears, the Treaty of New Echota, and the 2021 Nash case, analyzing their impact on Cherokee sovereignty and governance.
This book also highlights the Cherokee Nation’s ability to navigate modern political and cultural challenges while staying rooted in its traditions. Smith emphasizes the importance of constitutional adherence, cultural preservation, and ethical leadership as pillars of a thriving nation.
“This book is a tribute to the strength and resilience of the Cherokee people,” said Smith. “It’s a reminder of the importance of learning from history to build a better future.”
Cherokee Nation: Proceed Undaunted is a must-read for anyone interested in governance, Indigenous history, and the interplay between cultural values and modern challenges. It serves as both a historical account and a guide for fostering community resilience and integrity in leadership.
