W Fantasy and RPG: Download BattleMaps

BattleMaps and Resources for RPGs by Artist Benjamin

Game masters and dedicated RPG enthusiasts know how a well-designed map can transform a role-playing session. W Fantasy and RPG, led by talented Manchester, UK-based artist Benjamin, offers a vast selection of BattleMaps, tools, and even printable games (PNP). With over 16 successful projects on Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/benjaminweisz), Benjamin has become a recognized name in creating visual universes for RPGs.

W Fantasy and RPG

The W Fantasy and RPG website (https://wrpgmaps.com/) offers an extensive collection of ready-to-use BattleMaps, ideal for both tabletop and online RPG sessions. Game masters can easily download and incorporate these into their campaigns, fully immersing players in the story. In addition to BattleMaps, the site offers various tools and print-and-play (PNP) games, perfect for those looking for a quick and convenient gaming experience.

BattleMaps designed by Benjamin are compatible with many RPGs. Whether classic games like Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) or Pathfinder, or specific universes like Fallout or Star Wars, these maps fit any system perfectly. Their versatility allows game masters to customize scenarios while delivering a visually captivating experience for players, regardless of the campaign’s mood or world setting.

Benjamin: Acclaimed Artist with 16 Successful Kickstarter Projects

With 16 successfully funded Kickstarter projects, Benjamin is well-regarded in the RPG world for the quality and originality of his creations. His maps and tools are used by game masters worldwide. With a passion for art and RPGs, Benjamin offers incredibly detailed and immersive visual resources for role-players.

We thought we’d ask Benjamin a few questions to get a better understanding of his work.

When did you start working in this field, and how did the idea come about?

“I published my first campaign on Kickstarter in 2022. It was a small solo card game, Dungeon of Wanderers. It saw modest success, followed by a Christmas party game and then two larger print-and-play games, Shadow of Shogun and Magic to Ride. However, I started to encounter difficulties, and there were some challenges with the board game industry. Developing board games is tough. The rules for my fourth game were actually developed by a colleague of mine, Loránd Becskei from Hungary. It was around this time that I realized, while I was interested in tabletop games, writing rules and rulebooks was very time-consuming. That’s when I began to think about how I could skip that part of the process.

This led me to create RPG maps, assets, and other content. With rules already established, I could begin producing limitless content within well-defined frameworks. By September 2023, I was working full-time on RPG maps, and one of my Kickstarter campaigns became the fourth most successful RPG map campaign of all time. In terms of quality, I believe I’m among the top five, and in diversity, firmly in the top three.”

These are impressive achievements, but I imagine this market isn’t so easy.

“It’s not easy at all. Quality standards are very high. Even though I use modern tools like many others in the field, creating a map package can be a lot of work, especially if you aim for quality. Many competitors don’t bother. Some flood the market with AI-generated images without much thought. While I also use AI tools, I put a great deal of manual effort into my work, with several external contractors involved to ensure my backers receive high-quality maps quickly. Quality is paramount, although there’s always room for improvement, and today’s map packages are far superior to those I made a year ago.”

Speaking of AI, it was seen as a major drawback for some time. What’s your view on it now?

“Well, many are still against AI. I understand some quality and legal concerns. Honestly, my work is also in AI’s hands. I started publishing 3D models and drawings at 14, and anyone can find them with a quick search. AI has absorbed those works, and I’m fine with that. AI helps me, and I help it and others. I don’t see an issue, but I understand the legal aspects. AI’s quality, particularly in image generation, is currently limited. However, it helps me with basic map structures, corrections, and other tasks. Despite how it may sound, I still hand-draw some parts of the maps without any AI help. So, in my case, it’s not black and white. I always say that anyone against AI shouldn’t support me because I won’t reject a helping hand from technology.”

AI is a fascinating topic. Thanks for sharing your insights. With your broad skill set, we could explore this further in another article.

“Thank you, but I wouldn’t go as far as calling myself an expert. I’ve experimented with almost every AI tool out there, and yes, I also use AI in video production. I know how to edit, apply effects, animate, and do some 3D modeling—but I’m far from an expert in any of these areas. I truly appreciate the compliment, though!”

I believe you also do some programming?

“That’s an exaggeration. I’m working on a game, but it’s hard to say when it’ll be finished because RPG-related work takes up so much time and energy. We’ll see in the future.”

Could you share what motivates you to create this content?

“Well, first and foremost, I like eating. I eat regularly and need something to drink from time to time, which, of course, requires some cash. Jokes aside, I simply love doing this. I think I’m good at it, and I know I can offer quality content to my supporters. They seem to agree, too—over 60% of them are returning customers.”

That’s an impressive percentage, considering the typical rate is around 25-30%.

“Yes, it is. I’d like to thank my supporters for the incredible attention and backing they’ve shown me. I want them to know that it’s an honor to have their support and to have them launch me into a career path. Without them, this would be impossible. Hard work alone isn’t enough for this. So I’m truly grateful. The best way I can express this gratitude is by always striving to deliver my best for them.”

That’s a perfect note to end on. Thank you so much for the interview and for being so accommodating in helping with this article. Would you like to share any advice for younger readers?

“I’m not that experienced, but I’d still say this: It may sound cliché, but really, be persistent. If something doesn’t work, don’t give up—try again or try something different, but keep moving forward. If you don’t go anywhere, you won’t reach anywhere. But if you go somewhere, you can reach anywhere.”

Hundreds Leave Real World Behind to Live Out Medieval Fantasy in Texas

This week hundreds of Americans will be escaping the aftermath of the presidential election to live out a medieval fantasy.

From Wednesday to Sunday, an area of Texas near Austin will be declared a politics-free zone as people take part in a fully immersive experience inspired by fantasies like Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons. Hynafol’s Grand Gathering is taking place on the site of the Sherwood Forest Faire, in McDade.

The five-day event allows participants to create their own characters, take part in quests, solve puzzles and even battle against mythical creatures. Tickets are still available for the Grand Gathering, including weekend passes and spectator day passes which will allow people to watch the action on Saturday, November 9.

Adam Lyons, who is one of the event organisers and co-owner of Hynafol, says: “People will live in a fantasy medieval village, wear real armor, battle orcs and goblins, build alliances, complete quests and solve puzzles. There’s no technology allowed – no phones, no Internet, just living and breathing this immersive experience.

“It’s the perfect way to switch off from what is going on in the world today and the stresses of everyday life. We’re offering the ultimate escapism and we actually have a rule – while you’re here you can’t talk about politics or any real world issues at all.”

The Grand Gathering takes place on the grounds of Sherwood Forest Faire, one of the largest and most immersive medieval villages in the United States. The site includes its own castle, battlefield, jousting arena and multiple taverns and restaurants.

Hynafol is now in its third year and the event has grown bigger each year. To find out more or buy tickets, visit www.hynafol.com

Seattle Low Vision’s Dr. Ross Cusic Highlights Resources for Visually Disabled Washingtonians Ahead of December

As Gift of Sight Month (December) and International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3rd) draw near, Dr. Ross Cusic, Clinical Director at Seattle Low Vision and an outspoken advocate for visually disabled individuals, is intensifying his campaign to raise awareness about the critical gaps in care affecting this community.

According to the study published in Optometry and Vision Science, over 90% of visually disabled people are not referred to necessary resources and care, deeply impacting their daily lives and the well-being of their families. This issue affects 4% of Washington state’s population, predominantly senior citizens, leaving thousands without the support they need to lead independent lives.

Dr. Cusic, a charter member of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists and current chair of the Optometric Physicians of Washington’s low vision committee, is leading a campaign to address this critical issue. “Many people with low vision are unaware of the support available to them, and that must change,” says Dr. Cusic. “Our goal is to ensure these people, often senior citizens, can regain their independence and live their best lives.”

Seattle Low Vision specializes in customized low vision care, providing patients with prescription glasses and other vital tools. Dr. Cusic’s patients, most of whom are elderly and dealing with conditions like macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, can once again engage in activities they thought were lost to them, from watching television to seeing their family members.

To further support Washington’s visually disabled population, Dr. Cusic offers a free Washington Low Vision Guide and complimentary phone consultations to assist those in need. By empowering visually impaired individuals, Seattle Low Vision not only improves lives but also eases the burden on families who care for their loved ones.

For more information or to connect with Dr. Cusic, and patients, or to learn more about Seattle Low Vision’s approach, visit www.seattlelowvision.com or contact the clinic directly.

1. half alive

The trio from Long Beach, California, half•alive, have announced their highly anticipated third studio album, Persona. The album is set to be released on November 15th. The lead single, “Sophie’s House” sets the tone for the record. The track explores the nostalgic feeling you get from the years you spent under your parents roof and summer break from high school. 2. Pom Pom Squad

Pom Pom Squad is the musical project of queer, multi-racial artist, Mia Berrin. Born in New York and bounced from town to town through her childhood, the project was born from a feeling of displacement. As a young black, Puerto Rican, woman growing up in predominantly white spaces, she found an escape through her love of music and film. Consuming everything from the candy colors and synth-pop of Heathers to the pastels and gloomy mellotron of The Virgin Suicides; John Waters’s campy, sleazy take on suburbia to David Lynch’s surreal one – and in the process, gained a particular appreciation for the heady mix of music and visuals. Starting in the New York DIY scene as a grunge act, Pom Pom Squad has since developed a unique sonic tapestry, incorporating Berrin’s love of modern pop, lofty orchestral arrangements, and confessional songwriting.

New album ‘Mirror Starts Moving Without Me’ out October 25th!

♡ get in, we’re going down f**ing hill ♡

3. Mobley

Acclaimed indie singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mobley returns with a rhapsodic new single, “Y’r Ghost,” via Last Gang Records / MNRK Music Group. Written, performed, and produced by Mobley himself, this release signals his reemergence from the studio, where he’s been fervently crafting the sci-fi epic foreshadowed on his late 2022 EP Cry Havoc!. That collection of songs, as captivating as they are catchy, saw Mobley traversing sinuous soundscapes to tell the story of Jacob Creedmoor, the mysterious figure featured in the art and videos for that project. “Y’r Ghost” offers a first glimpse of the next installment of this sweeping sonic and narrative world.

While the studio is his first love, Mobley is most at home on the road. The consummate frontman has played dozens of festivals worldwide (including ACL, Lollapalooza, Hangout, SXSW, Noise Pop, Reeperbahn, and Float Fest); and opened for the likes of Cold War Kids, Phantogram, James Blake, Bishop Briggs, WAVVES, ARIZONA, Dermot Kennedy, Sylvan Esso, and Matt and Kim.

The present moment finds Mobley focused on the future: “Living with and working through these songs and stories has been the most fulfilling challenge of my artistic life. I can’t wait to share it all and see the life it takes on when it’s no longer just mine.”

4. DREAMERS

From clubs & arenas to festivals including Lollapalooza, Bumbershoot, Firefly, Reading and Leeds, Los Angeles-via-Brooklyn band DREAMERS (Nick Wold and Nelson) has shared stages with the likes of X Ambassadors, The 1975, Bleachers, Catfish & The Bottlemen, & Weezer while garnering coverage from Fader, Entertainment Weekly and Paste, among others, and performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live. In 2016, the band released their debut full-length album This Album Does Not Exist, featuring the top 10 Alternative radio hit, the electro-sprinkled pop gem “Sweet Disaster.” Three other songs also charted nationally: the ’90s throwback “Drugs,” the crooning “Wolves (You Got Me),” and the soulful, brisk power-pop of their single “Painkiller.” In 2019 DREAMERS released LAUNCH FLY LAND, their second full-length album that spawned the top 10 alternative radio hit “Die Happy.” In 2020, the band released two more alternative radio hits: “Heat Seeker” ft. grandson which was featured in Spotify’s Rock This Presents…Best Rock Songs of 2020, & the dark-pop love song “True Crime” ft. DeathByRomy. In 2021, the band came back with yet another collaboration: DREAMERS teamed up with legendary rapper Big Boi & alt-pop disruptor UPSAHL for “Palm Reader,” off their EP of the same name, which also got the remix treatment by legendary rock band All Time Low. Kicking off 2022, the band will release the infectiously catchy “Black Confetti,” the first in a string of new music DREAMERS will release throughout the year.

5. Balu Brigada

Balu Brigada are a groove-pop duo from New Zealand made up of multi-instrumentalist, dual-vocalists and writer/producer brothers, Henry and Pierre Beasley. With a pop sensibility that sits a little left of center, their tracks prioritize prominent bass-hooks and punchy drums with natural quirk and relatability, drawing inspiration from a wide range of influences including indie pop and alt-rock.

Key to Balu Brigada’s magic is their inimitable brotherly bond, with their joy for – and gentle ribbing of – each other coming through in everything they do. Their musical conversation mirrors their real-life communication as songwriters and co-producers, finishing each other’s sentences both in everyday discourse and in song. The Beasleys have spent much of the past few years creating a unique future-facing sound of their own.

Balu Brigada. New Zealand to New York

Keep a close eye on these 5 artists as they’ll be sure to make a splash in 2025 and beyond, across the new alt, indie alternative and alt pop genres.
