The Guangyuan Daughter Festival is a unique traditional festival in Guangyuan, Sichuan, China, commemorating the era of Empress Wu Zetian. Over 1,300 years ago, Wu Zetian was born in Guangyuan, leaving behind the folk custom of “women cruising the river bend on the 23rd day of the first lunar month.” In 1988, Guangyuan City decided to revive this folk tradition, naming it the “Daughter Festival,” which is now held annually on September 1st. This year marks its 36th edition.
The 2024 Guangyuan Daughter Festival, themed “Come to Shudao Guangyuan for a Beautiful Coronation,” features a meticulously planned lineup of 27 activities across six categories: thematic events, street culture activities, sports events, economic and trade exchanges, and more. During the festival, highlights include the colorful boat parade, the International Phoenix Boat Race, the “Zhao Dong Guangyuan” community parade, the “Phoenix Comes to Guangyuan” Daughter Festival grand celebration, the “Sing to the Jialing River” community singing event, the “National Style Daughter” Meiniang makeup event, the Golden Olive “Beautiful Carnival Night,” cultural exchange activities with neighboring Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan, and Ningxia, the 2024 Guangyuan Half Marathon and “Run Across Sichuan” Guangyuan station event, the “Empress Flavor” food carnival, and women’s health free clinics.
The Guangyuan Daughter Festival has evolved over the years, successfully integrating the historical culture of Empress Wu Zetian with Shudao culture, Three Kingdoms culture, and folk culture. It has become an important platform for showcasing female elegance, preserving historical sentiment, promoting open cooperation, and achieving shared development. The festival highlights rich cultural heritage and contemporary spirit, serving as a vibrant cultural emblem of Guangyuan that connects the city with the nation and the world.
