Empowering Insights: IIWB Director Attended MIT Forum Illuminating Family’s Role in Shaping Women’s Cognitive Landscape

On February 25, 2024, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) hosted an influential roundtable forum, “Origins of Insight: The Impact of Family Roots on Women’s Brain Development and Cognitive Patterns.” Esteemed speakers Datin Seri Haflin Nazri Aziz, Chairperson of Perwakilan Washington DC and Deputy Chairwomen of ASCWDC; Ms. Eva Ye, CPA, Founder of Sunshine Home Group and VIC Real Estate Investment Club; and Ms. Grace SHI, Director of the International Institute of Well-Being (IIWB), engaged in a profound exploration of how family environments shape the cognitive and emotional development of women.

The roundtable was mediated by Ms. Sofronie Dun, a producer with extensive experience in film, journalism, TV, and studio management, and a member of the MIT Sloan School of Management MBA class of 2025. Among the audience were notable figures such as Prof. Agustin Rayo, Dean of MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS); Pauline Marquez, Congressional Liaison Officer at the Embassy of Malaysia to the United States; and Ms. Yu Yu, the Matsutaro Shoriki Chair, Art of Asia at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, reflecting the broad interest and interdisciplinary engagement the forum attracted.

Datin Seri Haflin Nazri Aziz discussed the foundational role of family ethos in nurturing women’s insight and intelligence, emphasizing the significance of maternal wisdom and the cultural and ethical legacies families carry forward. Ms. Eva Ye highlighted the journey of self-discovery and transformation that women embark on, overcoming familial constraints through innovation and showing the courage to adapt to change. Ms. Grace SHI encouraged stepping beyond traditional boundaries to chart new cognitive territories, underlining the importance of personal evolution and the positive ripple effects it has on society.

Before embarking on his professional career, Mr. Mann received his Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences/Biology from High Point University in 1972, where he studied under geneticist Dr. Leo Weeks. He continued his education at George Washington University, this time concentrating on Fine Arts. In 1978, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Mann graduated from Pratt Institute with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1981. Studying art history at Columbia University and attending the Whitney Graduate Seminars in Contemporary Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art enhanced his education and experience. 

Mann illustrated the book Nerves and authored the screenplay for the film “Gloria de Visus.” Mr. Mann has contributed to exhibition catalogs, including museum catalogs, editions of Blast Magazine, and portfolios such as The Notebook of COLAB Arts. His articles have appeared in professional magazines such as NAP Text’s “The Optical Machine.” He designed the book “Oculus, A Survey Exhibition” for the Broome Street Gallery in New York, now housed at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. Dr. Murthy was named Women of the Year for 2012-2013 by The National Association of Professional Women USA. At the Triennial Medical Women’s Congress in Seoul, South Korea, in August 2013, Murthy received the Jhirad Oration Award, presented once every three years to an exceptional female physician. She is the first American female physician to receive this honor at an international meeting of the Medical Women’s International Association, which has female physician members in 50 countries. Dr. Murthy received the Millennium Milestone Maker Award at the 9th Annual Women’s Symposium at Sias University, China, in June 2015. She has received the Sojourner Truth Pin for her outstanding community service

Murthy, a faculty member at New York Medical College, has been recognized by her students for her exceptional teaching and as a source of inspiration for their pursuits in global health careers. Her academic achievements include being on the Dean’s list at NYU Steinhart School of Education and being named Public Service Scholar at the Robert F Wagner Graduate School at New York University. 

In 2023 Murthy was recognized by the FIAA and Consulate General of India NY as an honoree for International Women’s Day.
