AMD Electronics, a leading semiconductor company known for its cutting-edge technology in computing and graphics, has announced its participation in the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, set to take place from January 7 to 10, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada. During this prestigious event, AMD will hold a press conference to unveil a suite of next-generation innovations across gaming, AI PCs, and commercial sectors.
Scheduled for Pacific Standard Time (PST) on January 6, 2025, at 11:00 AM (2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time / January 7, 2025, at 3:00 AM Beijing Standard Time), AMD’s press conference will be held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. The event will be headlined by Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD’s Computing and Graphics Business Unit, along with other AMD executives, partners, and clients. They will discuss AMD’s expanding leadership in the PC and gaming sectors and introduce its portfolio of high-performance computing and AI products.
AMD has emphasized its commitment to driving artificial intelligence (AI) from the cloud to the edge and onto devices. Its products are built on a scalable, energy-efficient, and adaptable architecture, specifically designed for workloads ranging from large-scale AI model training to real-time inference. Although AMD has not disclosed the specific product types to be showcased, leaks and rumors suggest that the company will unveil two new Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), namely Strix Halo and Krackan, along with GPUs based on the RDNA 4 architecture.
Strix Halo is poised to be a powerhouse APU for mobile platforms, targeting high-end gaming laptops. It boasts up to 16 CPU cores (based on Zen 5 architecture) and is equipped with 40 Compute Units (CUs) in the GPU section, utilizing RDNA 3.5/3+ technology. On the other hand, Krackan is a smaller APU, likely belonging to the Ryzen AI 300 series. Meanwhile, the RDNA 4 architecture GPU is expected to underpin the Radeon RX 8000 series graphics cards, with at least one model rumored to be launched in January. AMD is likely to introduce a higher-end model first, followed by mainstream and entry-level products. Additionally, AMD might also introduce new entries in its Ryzen PRO series.
Beyond these highlights, AMD’s presence at CES 2025 will be marked by the launch of various new products across desktop processors, APU processors for mobile devices, handheld console processors, and standalone graphics cards.
On the desktop processor front, AMD is anticipated to unveil its top-tier X3D processors, such as the Ryzen 9 9950X3D with 16 cores and the Ryzen 9 9900X3D with 12 cores. These processors build upon AMD’s reputation for delivering exceptional gaming performance, as evidenced by the successful launch of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which quickly sold out upon release. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D will feature 16 cores and 32 threads, combined with 64MB of CCD cache, an additional 64MB of 3D cache, and 16MB of L2 cache, totaling an impressive 144MB of cache. The Ryzen 9 9900X3D, with 12 cores and 12MB of L2 cache, will have a total cache of 140MB. Benchmark tests suggest that these processors will offer performance on par with their non-3D V-Cache counterparts, maintaining AMD’s focus on serving both gamers and professionals with high productivity needs.
In the mobile segment, AMD will introduce new APU processors like Krackan Point and Strix Halo, along with RX 9000 series graphics cards based on the RDNA 4 architecture. Krackan Point is expected to cater to the mainstream and lower-end notebook markets, possibly aligning with the Ryzen AI 7 series, while Strix Halo is rumored to be a successor to the Ryzen AI 9 series, potentially named Ryzen AI Max 300 series. Strix Halo is expected to come in three SKUs: the flagship Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores, the mid-range Ryzen AI Max 390 with 12 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores, and the Ryzen AI Max 385 with 8 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores. The integrated graphics on these APUs, named Radeon 8060S and Radeon 8050S, are expected to deliver performance comparable to mainstream discrete graphics cards.
AMD will also introduce the next iteration of its FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) technology, FSR 4, which promises to further enhance gaming experiences. With competition heating up at CES 2025, AMD will need to demonstrate strong value for money and performance advantages in the mid-range and entry-level markets.
In the handheld console market, AMD currently dominates with solutions powering devices like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion GO. AMD is expected to showcase its second-generation Z-series processors at CES 2025, including the Z2 Extreme, Z2, and Z2G models. The Z2 Extreme, based on either Strix Point or Krackan design, features 8 CPU cores (3 Zen 5 + 5 Zen 5c) and 16 GPU cores based on RDNA 3.5 architecture. The Z2 serves as an upgrade to the existing Ryzen Z1 Extreme, while the Z2G includes 8 Zen 3+ CPU cores and 12 RDNA 2 GPU cores. Notably, Lenovo might unveil AMD Z2-powered handheld gaming consoles at CES 2025, including the Legion Go S pre-installed with SteamOS and the Legion Go 2 expected in the first quarter of 2025.
Graphics card enthusiasts will also have plenty to look forward to as AMD prepares to launch its next-generation Radeon GPUs based on the RDNA 4 architecture. AMD is adopting a naming convention similar to NVIDIA’s, skipping the 8000 series and jumping directly to the 9000 series. Preliminary benchmarks indicate that AMD’s new GPUs could offer performance competitive with NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series.
AMD’s innovations extend beyond hardware, as the company continues to collaborate with partners to tackle global challenges. AMD’s technology has been instrumental in various successful implementations, from enhancing performance and reducing licensing costs for Emirates NBD in the financial services sector to powering Respawn Entertainment’s “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.” AMD’s EPYC CPUs have also aided STMicroelectronics in accelerating chip design speeds, while AMD’s AI technology assists JR Kyushu and TAI in implementing new Shinkansen track inspections.
AMD’s recent financial performance and strategic moves underscore its growing prominence in the AI chip market. The company’s stock price has received a positive outlook from Wedbush Securities, which expects AMD to become a significant player in the AI chip space. AMD’s foray into chip leasing through the establishment of Chip World Technologies, a joint venture with Goldman Sachs and SoftBank, further diversifies its offerings and addresses gaps in AI and compute chip segments.
AMD’s journey from a semiconductor manufacturer to a multi-faceted technology giant is marked by strategic acquisitions and continuous innovation. Its agreement to acquire Xilinx, a rival chip manufacturer, for a deal valued at $35 billion underscores AMD’s commitment to driving industry consolidation and fostering advancements in heterogeneous computing.
As AMD prepares to steal the spotlight at CES 2025, the company aims to solidify its position as a leader in high-performance computing, AI, and gaming. With a robust lineup of new products and technologies, AMD is poised to make significant waves in the tech industry, continuing its tradition of pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
AMD’s presence at CES 2025 is not just about unveiling new products; it’s about showcasing the company’s vision for the future. AMD remains committed to collaborating with partners and clients to address the world’s toughest challenges through innovative technology solutions. With a strong focus on AI, gaming, and commercial applications, AMD is well-positioned to lead the charge into the next era of technology.
Stay tuned for more updates from AMD as it continues to redefine the landscape of computing and graphics at CES 2025.
