Korematsu Institute Publicly Debuts Short Documentary, “Error Before Us” in Honor of 80th Anniversary of Korematsu v. United States on December 18, 2024

DECEMBER 18, 2024 – San Francisco, CA – The Fred T. Korematsu Institute is publicly debuting the short film, “Error Before Us: The Coram Nobis Cases”, in honor of the anniversary of the landmark Korematsu v. United States Supreme Court case decision on their website.

December 18, 2024, is the 80th anniversary of the Korematsu v. United States civil rights case. With the decision, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII. The coram nobis cases examine government overreach of power, the lack of due process, and the strength of our Constitution in times of strife.

Woven together with the incarceration of 125,000 Japanese Americans are the broader issues such as the right to due process in the Fifth Amendment, the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, and the civil liberties guaranteed to every American citizen. The documentary features interviews with some pivotal members of the legal teams responsible for the cases.

In October 2023, the Fred T. Korematsu Institute commemorated the 40th anniversary of the coram nobis cases of Fred Korematsu, Gordon Hirabayashi, and Minoru Yasui in San Francisco. This film was directed by Eric Fournier and produced for the event.

As we honor the past, we can take action today through civic education and voting to advocate for a future of diversity, equity, and inclusion. For more information or to watch the film, please visit the Fred T. Korematsu Institute website: korematsuinstitute.org
