On November 24, the Kunshan Chinese Opera Museum hosted a grand cultural event with the opening of the exhibition “Mei Lanfang: A Contemporary Tribute,” commemorating the 130th anniversary of Mei Lanfang’s birth. Through an array of captivating visuals, videos, and rare artifacts, the exhibition celebrates Mei Lanfang’s unparalleled artistic achievements and the enduring charm of the Mei School of Peking Opera, inviting the public to rediscover the legacy of this Peking Opera master.
The exhibition is divided into six sections: “Prologue,” “The Master of a Generation,” “Cultural Ambassador,” “A Life of Dedication,” “Mission Reimagined,” and “Everlasting Memories.” Over 100 meticulously curated exhibits are on display, including performance costumes, traditional musical instruments, vintage photographs, ancient texts, manuscripts, calligraphy, paintings, audio recordings, and videos, offering a comprehensive glimpse into Mei Lanfang’s illustrious career.
A special highlight of the exhibition is Mei Lanfang’s pivotal role in fostering international cultural exchange. His artistic contributions are not only a treasure of China but also a legacy for the world. In the early 20th century, Mei Lanfang’s performances in Japan, the United States, and the Soviet Union marked a peak in the global dissemination of Chinese opera. His tours sparked extensive dialogue and diverse interpretations of Chinese opera and traditional art among global theater and literary circles.
Running through February 23, 2025, the exhibition is accompanied by a series of engaging educational activities and thematic lectures curated by the Kunshan Chinese Opera Museum. These programs aim to offer visitors unique perspectives on the exhibits, a deeper appreciation of historical treasures, and a profound understanding of Mei Lanfang’s life and artistry, showcasing the timeless allure of the Mei School of Peking Opera.
