Sorghum United Launches Graduate Internship Program to Empower Future Health and Nutrition Leaders

The Young Scholars Program offers graduate students the opportunity to work on impactful projects that align with Sorghum United’s mission.

Sorghum United, an international organization dedicated to promoting the benefits of sorghum and millets and their positive impacts on human health, environmental sustainability, and food security, is launching an exciting pilot initiative, the Young Scholars Program, aimed at nurturing the next generation of leaders in food security and sustainable agriculture. This innovative program will provide graduate students with hands-on experience and mentorship opportunities, allowing them to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges.

Two talented students from Symbiosis International University in Pune, India, Sreenidhi B. and Harinee Yerra, are the first participants in this pilot program. They are both pursuing their MBA in Public Health and Nutrition, bringing a wealth of passion and knowledge to this collaboration.

The internships will run through June, during which the students will work on self-proposed projects that address what they want to learn and how their proposal can help the Sorghum United mission and initiatives. If these students succeed, Sorghum United will expand virtual internships in the future, enabling more students to participate and benefit.

Graduate student Harinee Yerra, who is currently pursuing a master’s in nutrition and dietetics, brings a strong research background and a passion for tackling global issues, such as food insecurity and environment preservation. Ms. Yerra’s experience includes a publication on lifestyle modification and immune response in managing diabetes and a study on the prevalence and impact of non-communicable diseases among IT professionals. She looks forward to contributing to nutritional science, particularly on the benefits of sorghum in gut health, chronic diseases, and vulnerable populations, and hopes to create a more equitable and better world through this collaboration.

Sreenidhi B. is a dedicated student of public health nutrition and is passionate about understanding the intricate relationship between diet, health, and community well-being. Her academic journey, driven by a commitment to promoting nutritional awareness and advocating for healthier food choices within diverse populations, has equipped her with skills in analyzing nutritional data, conducting community assessments, and implementing health promotion programs. Sreenidhi is eager to develop effective strategies to enhance public health outcomes and foster sustainable eating practices.

By collaborating with Sorghum United, the two students will work on projects that advocate for sustainable, climate-smart agricultural techniques, promote the benefits of sorghum, and educate communities about its nutritional and economic advantages.
