Tareen Dermatology is proud to announce that it has been featured in the Summer 2024 edition of “Executive Decisions in Dermatology” magazine. The editorial, authored by Cheryl Davis of Tareen Dermatology, highlights the clinic’s innovative Gap-Year staffing program, which has proven to be an effective solution for medical assistant (MA) staffing issues.

A Gap-Year Staffing Program May Help Solve Your MA Staffing Issues

The editorial addresses a common challenge faced by many dermatology practices: attracting and retaining qualified MA staff. In response to this issue, Tareen Dermatology implemented a Gap-Year staffing program several years ago. This program recruits college graduates who are aspiring to attend PA or Medical School and need clinical experience to strengthen their applications.

Program Details

Each year, Tareen Dermatology follows a structured hiring and training schedule for Gap-Year employees. The recruitment process begins in the fall, with advertisements on social media and partnerships with local universities. The clinic also participates in university job fairs to identify top candidates. In December, candidates are invited for in-person interviews conducted by the clinic’s providers and leadership team. Job offers are extended in January, and contracts are signed in early February, with the program starting in June.

Training and Responsibilities

Tareen Dermatology’s Gap-Year program includes a comprehensive training “boot camp” and hands-on shadowing with experienced MAs. The daily tasks of Gap-Year employees encompass a wide range of clinical duties, including:

  • Rooming patients

  • Obtaining medical history information

  • Numbing patients

  • Assisting with surgeries

  • Bandaging patients

  • Entering pathology in charts

  • Ordering lab work

  • Checking prescriptions with the clinic’s dispensary

Additional Support

Beyond clinical training, Tareen Dermatology provides extensive support to help Gap-Year employees succeed in their future medical careers. This includes assistance with PA or Medical School applications, personal statement writing sessions, mock interview practice, and letters of recommendation. The program also offers financial education covering topics such as debt management, tax planning, and estate planning.
