Nevada sits on federal funds that could provide more EV chargers

RENO, Nev. (COLO) – The Nevada Department of Transportation is sitting on federal funds that could provide more electric vehicle chargers.

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program (NEVI) is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Through this, Nevada was given $38 million to build EV charging stations across the state. NEVI is a matching grant program, designed to spark investment in EV charging infrastructure by offsetting the start-up costs for buying and installing high-speed EV chargers at strategic locations along each state’s major highways.

Ryan Mckinnon, the Information Officer for Charge Ahead Partnership, explains that two years after receiving the funds to build these EV charging stations, Nevada has yet to ask for bids from companies that might want the money.

“Each state gets a certain amount of money and then they distribute that money in the form of grants to businesses who are well equipped to offer EV charging to drivers,” Mckinnon said.

Nevada is one of just 15 states that has still not issued an application for EV charging providers hoping to receive a grant. The vast majority of funds deployed by other states have gone to private enterprise, allowing small businesses and national chains to add EV charging to the services they provide to customers.

EV’s are becoming more popular but charging infrastructure hasn’t caught up, according to Mckinnon, which causes problems for those in northern Nevada.

“There’s a lot of folks who would like to get an EV but their biggest fear is range anxiety. They worry about driving 200 or 300 miles on a road trip because they might get stranded without somewhere to charge. That’s especially a problem in a state like Nevada where there’s large areas of open space,” said Mckinnon.

When asked why NDOT was sitting on the $38 million they said quote: “This is a strategic approach. NDOT wants to strategically deploy EV infrastructure to best benefit and meet the needs of Nevada. We have strategically analyzed and prioritized locations for charging infrastructure along Alternative Fuel Corridors. And now, we are working on agreements with partners who will build and maintain EV infrastructure outlined in the plan.”

While he appreciates thinking the funding through, Mckinnon says it’s time to speed up the process.

“There’s no reason it should take multiple years to develop a strategic plan for how to deploy this money. They can think through it and make a smart plan but also get the money out to the businesses who want to offer this service,” Mckinnon said.
