From Insomnia to Success Stories with Behavioral Sleep Solutions
We hear all the time the dangers associated with not sleeping the magical eight hours each night. Feeling like a failure for your inability to sleep, anxiety spikes and keeps you awake longer. You realize you have spent hours awake wondering what is wrong with your body. You relive the day – “what mistakes did I make because I was too tired to think clearly?” You think through the next day’s responsibilities – “what can I get away with canceling?” Doctors prescribe medications designed to help us fall asleep and stay asleep, but they only work short-term and this is a long-term problem. One medication is supplemented with another and another, but that cocktail still isn’t resulting in a good night of sleep. Will the bed ever be more than a torture chamber?
We don’t hear about the success stories, the people who were able to overcome insomnia and live a healthier, more enjoyable life. These are the people we all want to be. We spend a huge amount of effort researching sleep hygiene, trying new devices, and sampling medications and supplements. What if we could learn to simply be good sleepers who don’t have to put all this effort into something that should be effortless?
Behavioral Sleep Solutions exists for the purpose of creating success stories. Graduates of our program are able to fall asleep comfortably, get the sleep they need, no longer feel anxiety and fear about sleep, and generally enjoy life more. Many of them are able to discontinue medications in the process. If you would like to be a success story, contact me!

Services We OfferThe Impact of Circadian Rhythm Disorders
The misalignment of the circadian rhythm can have significant implications for daily life. For instance, night owls, who naturally feel more alert and energetic late at night, may find it challenging to function during standard working or school hours. On the other hand, early birds, who feel sleepy in the early evening and wake up before dawn, might struggle to stay awake for evening social activities or other late-day obligations. While there is nothing inherently unhealthy about being a night owl or an early bird, the discrepancy between an individual’s internal clock and societal expectations can lead to difficulties in managing day-to-day responsibilities. This misalignment can affect not only personal productivity and social interactions but also overall health if it leads to chronic sleep deprivation or irregular sleep patterns.
The Impact of Nightmares on Sleep and Well-being
Nightmares can cause significant disruptions in sleep patterns, leading to frequent awakenings and difficulty falling back asleep. This can result in a decrease in overall sleep quality and quantity, contributing to daytime fatigue, irritability, and impaired cognitive function. For individuals who experience nightmares regularly, the anticipation of disturbing dreams can also lead to heightened anxiety around bedtime, making it difficult to relax and fall asleep. Over time, this can create a vicious cycle where fear of nightmares perpetuates insomnia and sleep deprivation, further exacerbating mental health issues.
Discontinuing medications
One of the main reasons people find it challenging to stop using sleep aids is the fear of sleepless nights without them. Many individuals rely on these medications or supplements as a crutch, believing there are no viable alternatives. Common sentiments include, “If I don’t take it and have a bad night, I don’t know what else to do, so I keep taking it,” or, “I tried to stop using it, but had a bad experience and got scared, then started using an even higher dose.” These fears and experiences create a cycle of dependence, where the reliance on sleep aids increases over time, making the prospect of discontinuing them seem even more daunting.
Convenient At-Home Sleep Studies for Diagnosing Sleep Apnea
In collaboration with the physicians at Hypnos Health (https://www.gethypnos.com/), Behavioral Sleep Solutions offers at-home sleep studies for clients able to attend in-person sessions in Asheville, NC. This is not available via telehealth.
Sleep studies are often done in a lab setting and are excellent for diagnosing sleep apnea and various other sleep disorders. The downsides are availability (patients often have to wait weeks or months), cost, and comfort. If you are concerned about sleep apnea, you may be a good candidate for a low-cost sleep study you can complete in your home.
