The Chinese government is committed to enhancing the sense of gain and happiness among its people through comprehensive deepening of reforms. Cuiyuan District 1 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, built in 1984, is a typical old residential area in Hangzhou. With the assistance of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Company, Cuiyuan District 1 has continuously promoted community renovation and upgrading. The community has been designated as a “Future Community” project in Zhejiang Province, undergoing a complete transformation. The power facilities have been fully upgraded, and the underground lines are neat and orderly, making the area both aesthetically pleasing and safe.
Today, we’re following a team leader from State Grid Zhejiang Hangzhou Power Supply Company to see the new changes in Cuiyuan District 1.
“Warning Location: Residential Building 66, Unit 1, Room 303. Warning Content: Toilet water level unchanged for over 24 hours.” At 3:15 AM one day in July, an “Elderly Living Alone Alert” message flashed on the big screen in the digital dashboard of Cuiyuan District 1 “Future Community” in Hangzhou’s Xihu District. The staff immediately contacted the property management personnel via walkie-talkie, guiding them to check on the resident at the indicated address.
In this “Future Community” digital dashboard, similar scenarios frequently occur.
“Cuiyuan District 1 has many elderly residents, and better addressing their issues is a key feature of the community’s digital dashboard,” explained Zhang Kaida, the team leader of the low-voltage team at Xixi Power Supply Center of State Grid Zhejiang Hangzhou Power Supply Company. “In addition to the toilet tank monitoring alert we just saw, there is also a ‘three-piece warning set’ in the elderly residents’ homes, consisting of a smart electricity detector that senses abnormal electric currents, and smoke and gas detectors.”
Zhang Kaida started working in 2016 and has participated in and witnessed the transformation of Cuiyuan District 1 from an old residential area to a “Future Community.”
In 2021, Cuiyuan District 1 was included in Zhejiang Province’s fourth batch of “Future Community” projects. Through comprehensive renovation, the buildings have been completely transformed. The facades now feature a gradient color scheme, resembling shimmering water from a distance. The previously cluttered security bars, clothes racks, canopies, and flower stands have been uniformly beautified. The old power lines underwent major renovations and were moved underground.
Yu Hangbin, a staff member in the Urban Construction Division of Cuiyuan Subdistrict, was involved in the overall coordination of Cuiyuan District 1’s renovation. “What left a deep impression on me was the renovation of the meter boxes in the residential buildings,” he recalled. In March 2022, before the renovation, the community had not only old meter boxes but also external walls covered with PVC plastic pipes carrying wires from the meters. “State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Company helped us with unified design and implementation. We ate boxed lunches at the construction site every day, and in about a month and a half, nearly 350 meter boxes were replaced.” Now, the wires extending from the meters into residents’ homes have been neatly organized and connected to a unified cable tray, making it both aesthetically pleasing and safe.
Walking along the small paths in the community, one can see a series of “Cui”-themed public facilities linked together like a chain: Cui Shi Fang is a digital community canteen, Cui Song Ju is a senior care center, Cui Ke Guan is a science and education center for young people, and Cui Lin Li is the community gym and auditorium…
These facilities were all transformed from unused spaces owned by the subdistrict or joint construction units as part of the “Future Community” initiative. “For example, this Cui Station is now a casual coffee and light drink bar for leisure and study. It used to be a pump room. The original meters and line capacities were insufficient, so we upgraded the power capacity and replaced the lines as soon as possible,” said Zhang Kaida.
In Zhang Kaida’s memory, the transformation of Cuiyuan District 1 is marked by the silent dedication of many people who upheld the principle of “responding to the people’s call”:
• 36 newly installed elevators are operating smoothly, making it easier for elderly residents with mobility issues to travel.
• The old bike sheds have been upgraded to smart charging garages, giving electric car owners peace of mind.
• Electrical safety hazards in 69 buildings have been eliminated, providing over 3,000 households with greater peace of mind in their daily lives.
New era electric power services are becoming an integral part of the lives of residents in Cuiyuan District 1.
Since the community renovation began, State Grid Zhejiang Hangzhou Power Supply Company has collaborated with the government to formulate renovation plans, completing multiple rounds of overhead-to-underground power line conversions and equipment upgrades.
The electrical renovation not only includes visible upgrades but also extends to perceived conveniences. Features such as facial recognition AI in smart canteens, “Filial Piety” parking reservations with a single click, and intelligent guardianship for elderly people living alone highlight the benefits felt by residents. In the process of empowering with digital technology, State Grid Zhejiang Hangzhou Power Supply Company actively participates in the system construction of digital dashboards. They have conducted multiple site surveys, promptly followed up to provide optimal electricity usage plans, expanded power supply capacity, and deployed both strong and weak electrical wiring layouts, ensuring energy security for the comprehensive digital transformation of the community.
