The Cooking Olympics: The World’s Best Kept Secret is a fascinating non-fiction book by Dean Jeffrey Kropp. Everyone is familiar with the Olympic Games and can name their favorite athletes, but did you know that food has its own Olympics? Matthaeus Carl Banzer (1867–1945) is credited for organizing the Internationale Kochkunst Ausstellung (IKA) or Culinary Olympics which were held in Frankfurt, Germany from 1900 to 1992. He wanted chefs from around the world recognized and appreciated for their culinary skills while introducing new dishes to people of different ethnic backgrounds and cultures. One of his main goals was to inspire the general public to be more adventurous in food preparation and presentation. As the cooking Olympics became popular worldwide, so did the explosion and exploration of new, exciting creations in the kitchens of homemakers and local eating establishments. Europeans were not fond of ordinary American food, so many chefs who immigrated to America were instrumental in creating or perfecting recipes. The Armed Forces are strong competitors in the Culinary Olympics. Kitchen management also improved in the food industry because the United States Armed Forces’ systematic methods and the guidelines used in their kitchens were adopted as well.

I am overwhelmed with what I have learned in this amazing book, The Cooking Olympics: The World’s Best Kept Secret by the “Dean of Chefs,” Dean Jeffrey Kropp. I was unaware of this particular competition and appreciate the time and effort the author has spent compiling the wealth of historical information about the origins of the IKA, its participating countries and their teams, and the reasons why the Cooking Olympics changed the world in many ways. Even Adolph Hitler felt intimidated by this innocent competition that united countries. There is so much that I would like to share in my review about this book, but I dislike spoilers, so I encourage everyone to read this historical treasure trove by Dean Jeffrey Kropp. You will learn how much influence the past has played in the current food industry on an international level with the vision of a remarkable man, Matthaeus Carl Banzer.”
