It gently encourages young readers to look within themselves for the reservoirs of strength, resilience, love, and self-worth, encouraging a generation of individuals who are confident in themselves and compassionate in their interactions.
Gender and race neutral, A Tree for Me proudly upholds the values of inclusivity, embracing readers of all backgrounds, genders, and races. It seeks to awaken within its readers a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and the boundless potential that resides within each and every one of us.
What inspired you to write A Tree for Me?
The inspiration for A Tree for Me was born out of my own life experience.
As an adopted child, I was always yearning for a sense of true belonging. Once I began to uncover my story about how I was abandoned by my birth mother in another country, I began to realize that I would never have a family tree. As this stark realization slowly began to sink in, so did my quest for the truth. Because of my unique welcome into this world, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for life. I felt some sort of obligation to myself to make it a great one!
Searching for connections outside, I finally found one. The tree in the story is a depiction of the actual tree that I visited in my childhood. It was there, in the company of that venerable tree, that I learned the true meaning of belonging. The tree, with its unwavering strength and quiet wisdom, taught me that the most profound connections are those rooted in self-acceptance and self-love. The tree became my sanctuary.
How did you feel when you found out you received a Book Excellence Award?
I had tears of pure joy when I heard the news! What I appreciate most about the Book Excellence Awards is their recognition of outstanding literary works and commitment to promoting authors and their books. Winning an award from this prestigious organization not only validates the hard work and dedication I put into creating my children’s book, but also provides valuable exposure and credibility in the literary world. I am truly grateful to be part of this esteemed community of writers and creators.
How did your background and experience influence your writing?
I have never known any of my biological family, so for a long time, I searched for unconditional love outside myself. But, because I was not able to connect with the heartbeat of my birth mother, I instinctively connected with the heartbeat of the Universe! Over time I learned that the love, strength, and support I craved were, in fact, mine to give.
I have also been working with kids for over 25 years and feel a special connection to them. I naturally gravitate towards them, and they gravitate towards me! I feel a certain depth in my understanding of what they seek. Working with children is a gift that I cherish.
I never thought of writing a book as becoming a writer; I just thought that I had a beautiful message to share at the perfect moment in time, and went from there!
What is one message you would like readers to remember?
We are all interconnected, not only to each other, but also to Mother Nature. To be in touch with the living soil beneath us, is to be in touch with ourselves. Like the roots of a tree, our self-care and self-love lay the groundwork for true growth and inner peace. By loving and nurturing ourselves, we in turn love and nurture all that surrounds us. The key to peace and happiness begins when we look inward, face our truths, and give what it is we seek.
