Overlap: The Lives of a Former Time Jumper by N. Joseph Glass revolves around Marcus Hollister, whose wife Ellie was fatally shot during a mugging, leading to a reclusive existence and a desire to change the past. In an interview with reporter Jessica Matthews, Marcus discusses his time travel technology, which allows individuals to revisit their past through ‘overlaps.’ He recounts his unsuccessful attempts to save Ellie by reliving key moments and the limitations of the technology, revealing his eventual commercialization of it as ‘Vacations in Time.’ The impact of this invention is both positive and negative, and Marcus speaks about the ethical dilemmas and darker aspects of human nature. All of this leads to a shocking revelation from Jessica about her own experiences that changed everything Marcus believed to be true.

I went into Overlap by N. Joseph Glass without really knowing what it would be about as the blurb is vague, although I now see this is intentional and, for me, the overall story was better as a result of that. Glass has written a book that begins as an inquest into time travel, which has been initiated by Marcus and whose exclusive rights to the story have been granted by him to Jessica. What Glass transitions to is more of a philosophical narrative with a metaphysical twist that I absolutely did not expect whatsoever. Despite the depth of what is discussed, Glass’s writing style is clear and concise, making the work accessible. It’s a great balance of thoughtful storytelling and thought-provoking messaging, and I think others who read it will find it as satisfying as I have.”
