Rising Loneliness Among Young Adults, Says Harvard Study

Recent research from Harvard indicates that loneliness and feelings of social isolation are increasing, particularly among young adults. A study conducted in October 2022 reported that out of approximately 950 American respondents, 36% said they felt lonely “frequently” or “almost all the time” in the preceding four weeks. Among young adults aged 18 to 25, this number rose to 61%, who reported high levels of loneliness (1).

Wizz helps people to connect around the Globe

In response to these figures, Wizz provides a platform for individuals to connect digitally and engage in personal, meaningful conversations. It aims to bridge the gap between geographical locations, cultures, and interests, enabling users to explore new perspectives, gain insights, and build a diverse network of acquaintances.

The ‘Community Feature’ built into Wizz is specifically designed for those with shared interests. Whether users’ passions lie in music, gaming, manga, or other niches, Wizz allows to find and associate with individuals who share the same enthusiasm. This feature promotes deeper engagement and provides a platform to build connections based on mutual interests. “Loneliness has become a critical issue, particularly among young adults. We believe that technology can be part of the solution, and that’s what we aim to achieve with Wizz,” said Aymeric Roffe, CEO of the rising social app. This focus on user-friendly interfaces and engaging content has contributed to the app’s success, with the platform boasting over 10 million downloads.

Wizz began its European expansion last April, engaging European users and helping them reconnect with new acquaintances.

Wizz’s Commitment to User Safety and Inclusivity

A crucial part of Wizz’s mission is user safety.

Wizz has partnered with Webhelp, Sight Engine and Besedo for moderation, ensuring a safe environment for all users, particularly teens and with Yoti for age assurance. All messages and pictures reported on the application are automatically analysed by Besedo and Sight Engine, which will automatically block all content violating the community & content guidelines.

“Wizz understands parents’ concerns about their teenagers’ online safety. We are committed to providing a safe platform for everyone, including young adults and teenagers,” Roffe explained. As Wizz gains more attention and enters the top 10 of the most used social network apps, it faces the same challenges as other platforms regarding gatekeeping.

Utilising cutting-edge technology that doesn’t hinder the onboarding experience is essential to creating a delightful product. This goal is made possible through a partnership with Yoti, a market leader in age assurance (3). Yoti provides a fast, easy-to-use, yet powerful age-gating tool powered by AI. All users are required to use Yoti’s facial age estimation technology when they create an account. This ensures that users are matched with individuals within their age range, and stringent rules against unacceptable behaviours are in place to protect users. Yoti’s liveness technology prevents people from using a photo, video or mask to pass the age estimation check. These measures underscore Wizz’s commitment to providing a safe, inclusive platform for all users (2). “We share the concerns of the entire sector regarding ensuring the effectiveness and safety of our onboarding experience. Working with market leaders in this space allows us to maintain the same level of compliance as platforms serving billions of people daily,” concluded the Wizz CEO.
