Juan A. Siblesz, Italian citizenship, was born in Venezuela and raised in the United States. This diverse upbringing has given his music an international dimension. On the other hand, his grandmother was a famous anthropologist and was once invited by Premier Zhou to visit China, so he grew up loving Chinese ethnic culture and knowing that “what’s ethnic is global”, he came to Guizhou to explore the music of the Buyi people of Guizhou, which has strong ethnic characteristics.
As a multi-talented musician, he is proud of my instrumental skills, but he felt that his knowledge and skills were insignificant in the face of the eight-tone sitting and singing. Fortunately, he was given the opportunity to receive patient guidance and constant experimentation from his teacher of the eight-tone sitting and singing. After much hard work and practice, he finally mastered the simple skills of the eight-tone singing and gained a deeper understanding of the intricacies and beauties of this thousand-year-old genre of music.
By learning to sing, he was not only acquiring a musical skill, but also experiencing a cultural fusion and heritage. As a musician of Italian and Venezuelan descent, he has found in the music of the Buyi people of Guizhou a resonance with his diverse identity. The uniqueness of the eight-tone seated singing is derived from the unique cultural characteristics of the Buyi people, and through my study and integration as an outsider, he was able to further understand and respect this unique cultural expression. The power of this cultural integration has reinforced his belief that music is a language that transcends national boundaries and ethnicities, connecting people and facilitating cross-cultural exchange and understanding.
This music is more than an art form; it is the vitality and memory of the Buyi culture. Through the playing of musical instruments and the singing of melodies, the eight-tone sitting and singing conveys the emotions, history and values of the Buyi people. However, with the change of times and cultural impact, many traditional music forms are facing the crisis of being lost. In this context, he realized that as a musician, he has the responsibility to preserve and pass on such valuable cultural heritage.
After that, he will try to incorporate the unique rhythm and melody of Bajin Sitting Sing into his music composition in order to show the world the beauty of Buyi music and contribute to its heritage. By combining Bajin Sitting Sing with international music styles, he hopes to draw more people’s attention and interest to this traditional music form. He believed that through a combination of innovation and heritage, he can give new life to Bajin Sitting Sing in contemporary pop culture and allow it to continue to shine on a broader stage.
