Dr. Alan Hartford Selected to Be Featured in IAOTP’s Top 25 Global Impact Leaders Publication

Dr. Alan C. Hartford, Professor of Medicine with the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine and Program Director of the Radiation Oncology Residency Program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, was recently selected to be featured in the 1st Edition of Top 25 Global Impact Leaders by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).

Being selected as one of IAOTP’s Top 25 Global Impact Leaders is an honor, as only 25 of the world’s most brilliant minds who significantly influence the world through their work and actions are selected for this distinction. These are individuals who push boundaries and challenge the status quo. They create positive change and inspire others to do the same. 

These special honorees are passionate about making a difference and have the skills, knowledge, and resources to make an impact. Dr. Hartford has proven himself as an extraordinary professional and expert in the field. He will be honored for this distinction at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala in December 2023 at the iconic Plaza Hotel in NYC. A chapter will be dedicated to each honoree. The book is anticipated to be released in the 1st quarter of 2024.

Dr. Hartford has exemplary brilliance in his field, having dedicated almost three decades as a Professor in Medicine and radiation oncologist. Before starting his career in medicine, in four years at Stanford University Dr. Hartford earned both his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with distinction, and his Master of Arts degree in Philosophy.  Following the Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School he joined Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital as an intern in 1992. Dr. Hartford then completed his residency and fellowship in radiation oncology with the Massachusetts General Hospital even while finishing a Ph.D. in political economy and government from Harvard University. 

Dr. Hartford’s impressive repertoire of roles have included working with the American Medical Association over many years, serving on its Council on Ethical & Judicial Affairs, Council on Long-Range Planning and Development, and Council on Medical Service, as well as on the AMA’s Board of Trustees, and now representing the state of New Hampshire to the AMA’s House of Delegate. He has also served in various roles with the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, the American College of Radiology, the American Society for Radiation Oncology, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, and the NRG-Oncology Clinical Trials Group.

Dr. Hartford’s key areas of clinical expertise include primarily central nervous system tumors, genitourinary cancers, bone and soft tissue sarcomas, and head and neck malignancies, as well as technologies such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy, prostate brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. 

Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Hartford has received many awards and accolades and has been recognized in numerous publications and magazines worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. Dr. Hartford was awarded The International Healthcare Hero Award in Radiation Oncology in 2022, and was featured in IAOTP’s 50 Fearless Leaders Publication. In 2021 Dr Alan Hartford was inducted into IAOTP’s exclusive Hall of Fame. In 2020 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, graced the front cover of TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine, and was featured on the famous Times Square Billboard in NYC. In 2019 he was awarded IAOTP’s Top Doctor of the Year.

Dr. Hartford has been named a Top Doctor in New Hampshire Magazine nine times in the past 12 years, has been recognized as one of America’s “Top Cancer Doctors” by Newsweek Magazine, and has earned the Castle Connolly Medical’s title of one of America’s Top Doctors yearly for more than a decade.  He was named a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 2015 and was recognized as Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology in 2022 (only two dozen annually worldwide).  He has received numerous research fellowships and grants from such institutions as the American Society of Radiation Oncology, the American Cancer Society, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the MacArthur Foundation.

In addition to his successful clinical career, Dr. Hartford is a contributor to multiple prestigious medical journals with numerous articles and scientific reviews, and currently serves as Associate Editor of Practical Radiation Oncology.  He is deeply engaged in medical education, having created Dartmouth’s radiation oncology residency program and teaching many lectures and courses for students, medical residents, and faculty. Beyond medicine, he has written creative works, including his first novel, “The First Days of August,” authored under the pen name Alan Froning. He has held leadership positions with the American Society for Radiation Oncology, The American College of Radiology, the American Medical Association, the Radiological Society of North America, and several state medical societies.  Currently, he is President of the Council of Affiliated Regional Radiation Oncology Societies for the American College of Radiology. 

Looking back, Dr. Hartford attributes his success to the grace of God, the love of wonderful parents, and the gentle care of friends and mentors. When not working, he enjoys jazz piano, writing, traveling, and caring for his family, especially his remarkable daughter Anya. He hopes to continue providing excellent, innovative care to all his patients, educating future generations, and creating positive contributions to our society.
