Watauga River Fishing Ranked As One Of The Top 7 Tennessee Fly Fishing Streams

River Run Angling is a fishing guide service based in Bristol, TN. Their specialty is fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout along the South Holston and Watauga Rivers.

River Run Angling and Taylor Klarman are pleased to announce that Watauga River Fishing is one of the best locations for fly fishermen to experience! The guide services include full and half day float trips, as well as full and half-day wade trips, and customized trips to meet anglers’ preferences of all skill levels. The Watauga River, located just outside Johnson City, TN, and the South Holston Rivers produce beautiful rainbow and brown trout. Because of the catch-and-release policy for most fishermen in the area, the trout population of the rivers continues to expand and thrive!

The Watauga River can be floated on low water and does not need to be planned around the water releases of the TVA. There are several public access points for boat or wading along this river. Multiple access points are a significant convenience when you’re planning a Watauga River fly fishing trip for those trophy trout. The South Holston is home to a staggering 8,500 wild brown trout per mile and makes it a fantastic location to pair with the Watauga River. The trout population makes it one of the most highly sought-after trout fishing locations in the United States.

Owner/Head Guide Taylor Klarman is a retired USMC veteran passionate about taking anglers down his home waters for a beautiful day of trout fishing. He explained, “So many sections of these rivers hold a unique history, and I love sharing that with my guests. I intentionally include the historical facts of the rivers we fish and not just focus on fishing. Even though the fishing is spectacular, having a well-rounded experience of the rivers we float is equally important. I think our intentionality in this sets us apart and keeps our clients coming back year after year.”

Wata’gi (beautiful water) is a 20-mile tailwater system produced and generated by watershed via the Wilbur Dam. As it makes its way from the Wilbur Dam through the beautiful country landscape of Carter County, it provides the perfect backdrop for a day of landing big fish. In addition, the water temperatures are continuously cold, producing plenty of healthy brown and rainbow trout, which makes excellent fly fishing year-round.

The Watauga provides a sporty atmosphere of rapids, and smooth water, with runs and riffles and plenty of nice pockets of water. These characteristics make Watauga a great partnered choice to South Holston. In addition, the Watauga is consistent in fly fishing when the South Holston is not generating water for float trips, as the Watauga can always be floated on low water.
