Washington, D.C. – Writer’s Book Fair is proud to announce the publication of BLACKWATER: Lincoln’s War in West Florida, a new book by Richard Kyle Smith. This historical fiction novel takes readers on a journey through the Civil War and its impact on the people of the South. The book combines Smith’s passion for local history and his expertise in finance, offering a unique perspective on the conflict.
BLACKWATER is not just a story about the war itself, but also about the lives of those caught up in it. The book follows the story of John Geoghegan, a successful blockade runner from Pensacola Bay, and his love affair with Spanish beauty Maria Moreno. It also explores the story of Ben Jernigan, a friend of John’s who is engaged to French-educated Amanda Rucker and who tries to evade conscription by hiding in the Yellow River swamp. Despite his efforts to stay out of the conflict, Ben finds himself drawn to help Caleb, a slave who killed in self-defense.
“The war wasn’t about slavery,” says Smith. “Lincoln desired to preserve the South’s financial resources to run the government.” This sentiment is echoed by the famous quote by Abraham Lincoln, “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.”
Richard Kyle Smith is a retired Alabama CPA who has a deep connection to the South and its history. Born and raised in Milton, Florida, he graduated from Samford University and worked in public accounting before serving as the finance director of the city of Hoover, Alabama for sixteen years. After retiring in 2001, Smith devoted his time to his passion for local history and writing.
