This year, the LGBTQ+ community will celebrate World Pride and Valentine’s Day in a single month. This once in life-time combination is an exciting time to celebrate love and relationships within the queer community, especially since the two events are very rarely seen together. It’s also an important reminder of the challenges that many members of the LGBTQ+ community face, despite the progress that has been made in recent years for LGBTQ+ rights all over the world.
In light of these two important events occurring at the same time, relationship coach Markus van Driel offers his expertise on how best to navigate these two occasions as an individual, or as a couple. According to him, relationships are about shared experiences and helping each other grow while still embracing one’s own identity – something that can be a challenge for members of the LGBTQ+ community on a daily basis.
Van Driel goes on to explain further: “Relationships require mutual understanding, respect and communication between partners; however, these are often taken for granted or ignored by many couples today.” He adds that it’s essential for singles and couples of any sexual orientation or gender identity to practice self-care, set boundaries and create stronger connections because it’s critical for any relationship’s longevity.
That said, no matter what your relationship status is – single or coupled – there are plenty of ways you can celebrate World Pride and Valentine’s Day in a meaningful way:
Couples can celebrate by being clear on expectations and boundaries when participating in the celebrations. They can also consider volunteering for events and spending quality time together doing things for the community.
For single people, there are also plenty of ways to celebrate. Reach out to friends, spend time with family, and volunteer at one of the many events to get to know new people, increasing the chances of finding love.
However, regardless of your relationship status, it’s important to remember that love comes in many forms and that this is a time to celebrate all forms of love, regardless of your sexuality, gender and identity.
Ultimately, a combination of World Pride and Valentine’s Day serves as an important reminder that life should always be celebrated no matter what form it may take – especially when we get a chance to do so together!
