Men’s Divorce Recovery Providing Comfort to Those in Need

Pastor Turns Pain into Purpose

AUSTIX, TX – It was nearly six years ago when Dale Brown was met by his now ex-wife on the front porch of the parsonage of the church he pastored near Austin, Texas. It was just hours before that Brown had returned from a missionary trip in East Africa and he was surprised that his then wife would meet him outside. Unfortunately it wasn’t a warm welcome that was in store for him, instead he was informed that his wife had left him and had already moved out. This was both shocking and devastating for Brown.

The pain of this experience rocked his world. Due to the divorce he lost his job as a pastor. In his grief he felt a calling to transform his suffering into a book meant to support other men going through divorce. For months he woke up at 4:30am to write “The Daily Survival Guide for Divorced Men” and went on to found the Men’s Divorce Recovery ministry.

“I wanted to write the book that I wished I’d had and hope no one else ever needs,” Brown said, “but men continue to be underserved when it comes to divorce support.”

Today Brown’s Men’s Divorce Recovery ministry reaches men in more than 30 countries with its podcast and also supports men through their video series and through group and individual Zoom meetings. The primary concern for Brown is ensuring that men avoid the dark path of alcohol and drug addiction and any of the other behaviors chosen all too often to cope when men go through a divorce.

“Society has told men that we need to be tough, that we can’t share the kind of pain we are in,” continued Brown, “but when we fail to talk about it, it’s only a matter of time before that pain comes out in different and more destructive ways.”

Those who listen to the Men’s Divorce Recovery podcast have quickly become familiar with Brown signing off by reminding them not to make things worse and to be determined to finish well. He says this because more often than not men do make things worse with their actions when they try to go at it alone or get advice from the wrong people. Instead, he asks his listeners to think about what they would want their family and friends saying about them as they finish the rest of their lives.

Brown is a Ph.D. who has served as a pastor for more than 41 years. He is the author of “The Daily Survival Guide for Divorce Men” and the “S-Group Workbook: Surviving & Thriving Beyond Your Divorce.” He lives just outside of Austin, Texas. His ministry can be found at www.MensDivorceRecover.org.
