New York, NY – Dr. Anil Shah, a world-renowned facial plastic surgeon and founder of Noses and Necks New York, has recently published a critical study titled “Quantitative Analysis of Tranexamic Acid Effects on Ecchymosis in Rhinoplasty” in the National Institutes of Health. This prospective study sheds new light on the controversial use of tranexamic acid (TXA) to reduce postoperative bruising in rhinoplasty patients.
Study Overview
Rhinoplasty, one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, often comes with postoperative challenges such as bruising (ecchymosis), which can impact patient satisfaction and recovery timelines. Tranexamic acid, widely discussed for its potential to reduce bruising, has remained a contentious topic among surgeons due to its associated risks, including seizures, blood clots, and vision changes.
Dr. Shah’s study, conducted between March and June 2019, focused on a group of 100 primary rhinoplasty patients—50 of whom were treated with TXA while the remaining 50 served as a control group. Using advanced quantitative methods, including Adobe Photoshop’s multiple objective color scales, Dr. Shah and his team measured and analyzed postoperative bruising on day 7 after surgery.
Key Findings
-
There were no statistically significant differences in postoperative bruising between patients treated with TXA and those in the control group.
-
No adverse events related to TXA, such as seizures or vision changes, were reported in this study.
-
TXA, administered intravenously and via intraoperative injections, did not demonstrate efficacy in reducing postoperative bruising in rhinoplasty.
Impact and Implications
“This study highlights the importance of evidence-based decision-making in plastic surgery,” said Dr. Shah. “While tranexamic acid remains an option for some surgeons, its efficacy in reducing bruising during rhinoplasty does not appear to be supported by quantitative data. It’s crucial to balance patient safety with outcomes, especially when considering interventions with potential side effects.”
The study is a milestone in promoting transparency and data-driven practices in facial plastic surgery. Dr. Shah’s use of advanced imaging technology for quantitative analysis provides a replicable methodology for future research into postoperative outcomes.
