2024 Chengdu World Horticultural Exposition: Showcasing the Charm of China to the World

The 2024 Chengdu World Horticultural Exposition, a Category B world horticultural event, is hosted by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, China Flower Association, and the Sichuan Provincial Government, with the Chengdu Municipal Government as the organizer. Under the theme “Park City, Better Living,” the Expo adheres to principles of green, low-carbon development, sustainability, and inclusiveness. Leveraging Chengdu’s favorable plant-growing conditions, it features native tree species and showcases distinctive plants such as medicinal herbs, fruits, vegetables, roses, crabapples, and crape myrtles. The Expo creates diverse plant communities and landscapes tailored to each garden’s characteristics. The venue is located in the central section of the Jiangxi River Ecological Corridor in the core area of Chengdu’s Eastern New Area Airport City, near key urban developments such as the Sancha Commercial Center, Tianfu Olympic Park, Aviation Innovation Industrial Zone, Jiangxi North Eco-Livable District, and the Aviation Smart Logistics Park.

On October 28, 2024, the Chengdu World Horticultural Exposition concluded after 186 days, running from April 26 to October 28. During the event, over 100 international exchange and academic activities, along with 3,000 cultural, artistic, business, and educational events, were held. These included flower and horticultural competitions and drew approximately 3,600 experts and representatives from 32 countries, including the United States, Canada, and Japan, as well as from across China. The Expo fostered international exchanges and cooperation in horticulture, culture, and the arts, while its core zone achieved RMB 920 million in flower sales revenue.

The Expo featured 112 themed gardens and adopted a “1 main venue + 4 sub-venues” model for the first time. The main venue, located in Chengdu’s Eastern New Area along the Chengdu-Chongqing development axis, exemplified the future vision of a park city. The four sub-venues—Wenjiang District, Pidu District, Xinjin District, and Qionglai City—each highlighted unique themes, such as Sichuan-style bonsai, the flower industry, agricultural exhibitions, and biodiversity, vividly portraying the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature. Additionally, over 60 local plant species and 500 distinctive garden plants were incorporated into landscape and floral arrangements, creating a rich tapestry of horticultural scenes throughout different blooming seasons. Visitors were treated to a spectacle of exotic plants from five continents flourishing together in the same gardens.

The 2024 Chengdu World Horticultural Exposition embodied the overarching theme of green development. By leveraging Chengdu’s natural resources, diverse topography, and landscape, the Expo followed the natural contours of the land to sculpt earth, manage water, and plant trees in harmony with the environment. This approach highlighted Chengdu’s distinctive park city concept. A Sustainability Report was developed, embedding the Expo’s principles of green, low-carbon development, sustainability, and inclusiveness throughout its preparation, construction, and operation. These principles were applied across various domains, including architecture, energy, education, carbon sequestration, and transportation.

Chengdu presented the world with a horticultural event of international standards, showcasing the uniqueness of Chinese culture and the charm of Sichuan’s landscape. The Chengdu Expo served as an excellent platform for displaying the achievements of park city development and a new model of China’s commitment to ecological civilization.

The 2024 Chengdu World Horticultural Exposition was not only a feast for the senses but also a profound practice in ecological civilization. Through this event, Chengdu demonstrated its achievements and commitment to green urban development and ecological construction. Looking ahead, Chengdu will continue to uphold the principles of green development, advancing ecological civilization and contributing China’s wisdom and solutions to global efforts in building a sustainable future.(Zheng Liang, Li Zhenyu)
