Raymond Wolk, founder and owner of County Asphalt and Trucking LLC, is raising awareness about the importance of skilled trades and career opportunities in the asphalt paving industry. With over 19 years of experience, Wolk is passionate about encouraging young people to explore rewarding careers in trades, particularly paving, which he believes is often overlooked.
“There’s a lot of pride and satisfaction in paving,” says Wolk. “I’ve seen first-hand how a career in a skilled trade can provide a stable, fulfilling life. I started working with my father in asphalt when I was 13, and that early experience opened doors for me.” Now, Wolk is an advocate for the next generation, hoping to shift perspectives on the value of hands-on skills and the many opportunities in trades.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that job opportunities in construction and extraction occupations will grow 4% from 2021 to 2031, with skilled trades remaining in demand. “Young people need to know that jobs like asphalt paving are stable, well-paying, and offer real growth potential,” Wolk explains. “And there’s a real need for motivated workers in this field.”
Wolk emphasizes that the pathway to success in paving is straightforward and accessible. “You don’t need a four-year degree to get started in trades,” he points out. “With the right training and a good work ethic, you can quickly start making a solid income.” Wolk himself started County Asphalt and Trucking LLC at the age of 23, building his business from the ground up with a focus on quality and customer service. Today, his company is known throughout Polk County and beyond for reliability and dedication.
For Wolk, the work itself is rewarding. He enjoys seeing tangible results from every job and values the connection he has with his clients and community. “It’s a field where you can take pride in what you do. You’re creating something that people use every day,” he says. “That sense of accomplishment and respect for the work is something I want more people to experience.”
In addition to running his business, Wolk regularly volunteers at local shelters and participates in community events, showing his commitment to giving back. Through these efforts, he hopes to inspire others to consider paving and other skilled trades. “This is more than a job — it’s a career you can build a life on. I want young people to know that skilled trades are worth pursuing,” Wolk concludes.
