Thick as Glue is more than just a memoir—it’s a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and divine strength. Annette Gaston’s powerful narrative unfolds the story of her life through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, sharing the trials and triumphs that have shaped her into the woman of faith she is today. From racism on the mission field to betrayal in love, abuse, and childhood poverty, Annette’s journey is a reflection of the many obstacles life can throw our way—but also the unwavering hope and courage found in trusting a higher power.
Born in 1955, Annette was a twin with her sister, Annie, and together they were viewed as “miracle babies” after their brother, Mancie, was born with a mental disability. At the age of twelve, Annette faced the profound loss of her father, which led to a time of significant poverty. Despite the hardships, Annette’s determination and faith led her to graduate from both high school and college. It was in college that she met her future husband, a man who would go on to enter the ministry and eventually embark on missionary work in Africa.
In 1979, Annette left the United States to join her husband in Sierra Leone, West Africa. There, she encountered overwhelming challenges, from adjusting to a new culture to confronting witchcraft. These trials, compounded by illness and personal struggles, left a deep mark on Annette’s life. After contracting malaria and enduring a worsening condition, she returned to the U.S. and continued her personal and spiritual journey.
In Thick as Glue, Annette also shares her time in Portugal and Trinidad, where she faced racism in Portugal and marital problems in Trinidad. These challenges, coupled with the struggles on the mission field, ultimately led to a divorce in 1988. This period was marked by depression and emotional turmoil, forcing Annette to seek refuge and support from her twin sister. Through it all, Annette held on to her faith in God, finding solace and strength in His promises.
This deeply personal memoir is not only a story of struggle but one of perseverance, faith, and the transformative power of relying on God in the face of life’s most difficult trials. Annette’s journey will inspire readers to press on, no matter the circumstances, and to believe in the healing and restoration that comes through faith.
