China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline completes construction, to shore up energy supply in East China

China’s National Oil and Gas Pipeline Network Group announced on Monday that the China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline, an important energy corridor for China, has completed construction and entered its final commissioning phase, according to CCTV.

It is reported that once fully operational, the pipeline will supply annually 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Northeast China, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and the Yangtze River Delta, sufficient to meet the annual gas needs of 130 million urban households, easing natural gas supply constraints in these regions.

The east-route pipeline spans 5,111 kilometers, including 3,371 kilometers of newly built sections. It starts in Heihe, Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, and extends to Shanghai, China’s largest industrial city on the eastern coast.

As an essential energy route for eastern China, the gas pipeline is expected to play a vital role in securing the regional natural gas supply, supporting the development of a clean, low-carbon, and efficient energy system, and promoting high-quality economic and social development.
