To showcase the treasures of intangible cultural heritage, promote Chinese culture, and facilitate exchanges between Chinese and Canadian artists, Sanji Cairang, a Chinese Thangka artist, a representative inheritor of Regong, and the president of Qinghai Sangxiong Ruixiang Danqing Thangka Painting Academy, was invited by the National Artists Association of Canada to attend the 2024 Canadian International Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition in Toronto from October 4th to 6th, and held a Sanji Cairang Thangka Art Canadian Tour Exhibition at the Most Chinese Cultural Center.

The opening ceremony of the [Sanji Cairang Tibetan Thangka Art Canadian Tour Exhibition] was hosted by the Canadian National Artists Association on October 6. Sanji Cairang remarked that Thangka is a comprehensive encyclopedia and unique painting form of the Tibetan people, being not only intangible cultural heritage of China but also world intangible cultural heritage.
When he was 8 years old, he entered China’s first national Thangka inheritor, Chinese master of arts and crafts Zhang Daqian, disciple of national intangible cultural heritage inheritor Xiawu Cailang Master standard study and mian Tang school Thangka painting, and Master Xiawu Cailang and Deng Daji personally passed it on.
He himself comes from the Thangka family, the representative inheritor of Regong Thangka art. This was his first visit to Toronto and he brought more than 50 works to the exhibition.
These works are very precious and can bring a rich visual feast for local artists and Thangka art lovers.
During the opening ceremony, a Thangka donation ceremony was held. Director Sanji Cairang donated a Thangka to the Greater Toronto Chinese Cultural Center, which was accepted by Mr. Lin Shutian, Chairman of the Greater China Cultural Center, who extended his thanks.
Under the witness of dignitaries and guests, the organizers also held an award ceremony for Sanji Cairang for his outstanding contributions to Canadian cultural arts.

At the exchange meeting held in the afternoon, President Sanji Cairang and representatives from the local art community explained the inheritance and development of thangka with passion, and interacted with everyone, which benefited the guests present a lot.
Sanji Cairang is a representative Thangka inheritor of Regong, currently serving as the vice chairman of the Qinghai Thangka Art Association, a master of Qinghai Arts and Crafts, the deputy director of the Thangka Professional Committee of the China Arts and Crafts Association, and the president of the Qinghai Sangxiongruixiangdanqing Thangka Painting Academy.
In the preparation of the 2024 Canadian International Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition, he was invited to become a co-organizer of the exhibition and served as the vice chairman of the organizing committee.
At the award dinner held on October 6, Canadian Member of Parliament Chen Shengyuan and President of the National Association of Canadian Artists Wang Gang presented the certificate of [Chinese Cultural Communication Ambassador] to President Sanji Cairang.
Sanji Cairang and his party also visited the Chinese Consulate General in Toronto, and paid a visit to the Vice President of the World Buddhist Federation, the Dean of the Canadian Buddhist College, the President of the Canadian Buddhist Association, and Master Daya of the Zhan Shan Jingshe. They also visited Mount Wutai and the Ontario Museum, and donated Thangka works to the Ontario Museum for collection.
The 2024 Canadian International Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition showcases nearly a thousand exquisite works submitted by hundreds of calligraphy and painting artists from over 40 countries across Asia, Europe, and North America, including nearly 100 members of the China-US Association and the China Calligraphy Association. The works exhibited include those of many famous artists, including Fan Zeng, Lu Yushun, Fan Yang, Yang Xiaoyang, Kong Weike, Zhang Wang, Wang Xijing, and others. The calligraphy and painting works of the former presidents and vice presidents of the Chinese Calligraphy Association, such as Shu Tong, Qi Gong, Liu Bingsen, Ouyang Zhongshi, Zhang Hai, Su Shishu, Sun Xiaoyun, and the former president of the Shaanxi Calligraphy Association Zhong Mingshan, as well as the vice president of the Central Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Du Benji, also made their debut in Toronto for the first time.
