New Book “The Goffman Course” Explores the Seminal Theories of Erving Goffman Through Scholarly Analysis and Case Studies

Authors Thomas Hood and Van De Vate Offer a Deep Dive into Goffman’s Pioneering Work on Social Interaction, Framing, and Identity.

The Goffman Course presents a thorough exploration of the influential ideas developed by sociologist Erving Goffman, whose work continues to shape the way we understand social interaction and identity. Co-authored by Thomas Hood, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and scholar Van De Vate, the book brings together lectures designed to challenge students and readers to engage critically with Goffman’s theories.

The Goffman Course is structured into five distinct sections that guide the reader through key phases of Goffman’s intellectual contributions:

  1. Van De Vate’s Discussion of Goffman’s Work Before Frame Analysis
  2. Hood’s Discussion of Goffman’s Work Before Frame Analysis
  3. Van De Vate’s Discussion of Frame Analysis
  4. Hood’s Discussion of Frame Analysis
  5. Hood’s Application of Goffman’s Concepts to Modern Gender Crossers

Hood delves into Goffman’s ideas of Apologia and forms of talk, applying these concepts to the published accounts of four male-to-female “gender crossers”: Jan Morris, Renée Richards, Deirdre McCloskey, and Caitlyn Jenner. This analysis offers a fresh perspective on identity formation and the performative aspects of gender transitions.

The book originates from a special course that Hood and Van De Vate taught at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. These lectures were given over several years to both sociology and philosophy students, providing interdisciplinary insights into Goffman’s work. The authors weave together Goffman’s theories with the writings of philosophers and sociologists, encouraging readers to assess the conclusions Goffman reached and his methodological approach to analyzing social life.
