Tap-In Magazine Captures the Essence of Legacy at the 3rd Annual Living Legends Gala in Atlanta, GA

Atlanta, GA – October 10, 2024 – Tap-In Magazine proudly participated in the Thomas J. Blocker Society’s 3rd Annual Living Legends Gala on September 28, 2024. This extraordinary event recognized and honored the exceptional contributions of past, present, and future African American health professionals and leaders in medicine, dentistry, and other healthcare professions.

Founded in 2012, the Thomas J. Blocker Society consists of distinguished alumni from Morehouse College dedicated to empowering the next generation of African Americans and Morehouse men pursuing healthcare and biomedical sciences careers. This year’s gala underscored the society’s mission and celebrated the enduring influence of its alumni, whose groundbreaking efforts have paved the way for future healthcare leaders. The event honored two exemplary servant leaders: Dr. Harold Jordan, the first Black resident physician at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and former Chair of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical College, and Dr. Willie Underwood III, a well-respected urologist, researcher, and medical innovator, who is the immediate past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association. Both honorees have diversified and transformed medicine in mental and prostate health, health policy, and health delivery systems throughout their distinguished careers.

Adding to the evening’s allure, the legendary Jasmine Guy, known for her iconic portrayal of Whitley Gilbert-Wayne on the beloved series “A Different World,” served as the Mistress of Ceremonies. Her Emmy Award-winning charisma and star power illuminated the night, leaving an indelible mark on all who attended.

Tap-In Magazine was on-site to capture the glamour and excitement of the gala, providing exclusive interviews and insights from the event’s highlights. This gala celebrated achievements and served as a vital fundraising initiative, supporting the educational aspirations of future healthcare leaders from Morehouse College.

“This was an extraordinary evening to be a part of,” expressed Dr. Tandra Price, founder of Tap-In Magazine. “We are privileged to witness and document an event that will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy for the next generation of healthcare professionals.”

As the night unfolded, I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Vandy T. Gaffney II, M.D., M.S., FASA,’06, the current President of the Thomas J. Blocker Society, who expressed his enthusiasm for the society’s future. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of African American professionals. His prescription for the attendees was to “celebrate, converse, dance, donate, and enjoy this wondrous occasion as we stand in the presence of current and future living legends.” Many enthusiastic Morehouse College students shared their renewed inspiration and commitment to serving their communities as future healthcare professionals.
