Colton Treloar Wins Bogin, Munns & Munns 2024 FASD Scholarship

Orlando, FL – Colton Treloar, a student at the University of Missouri – Columbia, has won the Bogin, Munns & Munns 2024 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Scholarship. The $2,500 award is given to those who have or have been affected by FASD, a preventable condition which causes developmental and intellectual disabilities, and wish to pursue higher education.

Personal Experience Shaped Colton’s Professional Ambitions

“My younger brother, Alex, was diagnosed with FASD when he was four years old,” Colton writes in the award-winning essay that earned him the FASD Scholarship. “This diagnosis not only changed his life but also profoundly influenced mine.”

From that point on, Colton’s main ambition has been to assist families affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. He chose to major in psychology so he can learn how to develop early intervention programs for children with FASD and create support groups for the siblings of those living with the condition.

Colton will graduate in May 2027. Until then, he plans to continue making a difference by giving speeches, writing articles, and advocating for policies that will help children like his brother Alex.

“By sharing my brother’s story and my own experiences, I hope to educate others about the realities of FASD and the importance of empathy and understanding,” he says in his essay.

What Is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder?

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) defines FASD as “a range of physical, cognitive, and behavioral abnormalities caused by prenatal alcohol exposure.” It is entirely preventable. As a result of the condition, children may struggle to keep up at school, exercise self-control, and socialize with their peers.

The fact that FASD is not well known among the general public or even among medical professionals makes their lives even more challenging—a situation that Colton hopes to change by using the FASD Scholarship to fund his education and support the critical work he already does.

“I am committed to using my experiences and education to make a lasting difference in the lives of those affected by FASD, and I am grateful for the opportunity to further this mission through the support of this scholarship,” he writes in the conclusion of his essay. “Together, we can build a more compassionate and inclusive community for all.”
