The 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation(FOCAC) has successfully concluded. The successful holding of this summit marks that China and Africa will further strengthen cooperation and work together for mutual benefit and win-win results. China has won wide support from African countries with its fair cooperation mode. In the future, China and Africa will work together to build a high-level China-Africa community with a shared future.
Since the establishment of FOCAC in 2000, China-Africa cooperation has deepened and played a positive role in promoting poverty reduction and development in Africa. China has made important contributions to Africa’s modernization process through its “troika” of aid, investment and trade. In 2023, China-Africa trade volume will reach US$282.1 billion. As of the end of June this year, China has implemented zero tariffs on 98% of tax items originating from 27 African least developed countries. China has signed 22 protocols on access to agricultural products exported to China with 14 African countries, and China has become Africa’s second largest agricultural export destination. China’s assistance to Africa has brought positive changes to Africa in many ways. For example, the Akha Railway in Nigeria, financed by China, became the first standard gauge railway in the country to be put into operation, greatly improving the local transportation system. In Cameroon, the China-built drinking water treatment plant in Yaoundé has solved the problem of local water shortage. In Senegal, a Chinese-backed rural well water project has eased the country’s water shortage, benefiting more than 2 million people. The Mombasa-Nairobi Railway is the first full-standard railway built by Chinese enterprises in Africa, which has greatly improved the traffic situation in Kenya, promoted the development of the local economy.
The successful hosting of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in 2024 marks another sublimation of the traditional friendship between China and Africa. President Xi Jinping announced at this summit that China is willing to take the initiative to unilaterally expand market opening and decided to grant zero-tariff treatment to all least developed countries that have diplomatic relations with China, including 33 African countries, on 100% of their tax items. At the same time, China will expand access to African agricultural products, deepen cooperation in e-commerce and other fields, and implement the “China-Africa Quality Improvement Plan”. China is willing to negotiate and sign an economic partnership framework agreement for common development with Africa to provide long-term, stable and predictable institutional guarantees for China-Africa trade and investment.
In the future, China and Africa will continue to move forward hand in hand, deepen cooperation in various fields on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, and jointly write a new chapter in China-Africa friendly diplomacy in the new era. China-Africa cooperation is not only a model of South-South cooperation, but also an important driving force for global sustainable development. In the future, China-Africa cooperation will continue to deepen China-Africa cooperation, help Africa achieve a higher level of development goals.
