Agora launches search engine to give online stores an alternative to Amazon

Agora is a search engine that uses AI to help customers discover, compare and purchase millions of products sold across thousands of stores in one place and through a single transaction. The company, which launched in the US in February, has already indexed 3 million products and served 350,000 customers looking to shop from small, boutique retailers as well as mainstream brands.

“We are building a search engine for people to discover and purchase any product sold on the internet. For customers, we provide personalized ways to search, compare, and purchase any kind of product. For merchants, we offer a new distribution channel to reach a wider audience without taking a percentage of their sales,” said Param Jaggi, CEO of Agora.

Agora brings customers new ways to explore and interact with online shopping. Take Athena, it’s AI-powered shopping assistant, which after a short conversation is able to gather customer’s preferences and provide them with six highly-relevant product results. Or “image search,” a feature that allows customers to upload a picture from their phone or computer to instantly trigger a search for similar products.

The company’s freemium model plans to attract merchants by offering a free and quick sign-up experience that gives merchants visibility over their store’s performance on Agora, a view into their orders and customers, and tools to add team members. For merchants who want to ensure their products always show up at the top of relevant search results, Agora offers fixed, monthly subscriptions as well as a pay-per-click advertising program called “Boosted products.”

The model stands in contrast to some of the main e-commerce platforms, who charge 10%-30% commissions on merchant’s sales. “We want to give merchants a credible way to sell their products outside of Google and Amazon, where they have a really tough time competing and have to worry about their stock getting cannibalized. Our automated onboarding and transparent business model mean we give smaller merchants a real chance at succeeding.”, said Jaggi, who has himself run an e-commerce store.

Agora’s long-term vision is to build the world’s store, connecting customers to sellers around the globe and enabling better ways to shop. Powered by 24/7 human customer support, the company believes that putting customers first with quick and transparent communication will be key to its success.
