In a bold new initiative to celebrate art and history, Plogix Gallery, in collaboration with a curated selection of artists from around the world, is transforming London Waterloo Station into a dynamic showcase of cultural narratives. Among the distinguished artists is Randa Hijazi, a contemporary Syrian Canadian painter whose work bridges the cultural divide between East and West while delving deep into the essence of humanitarian issues.
Born in Damascus, Syria, Randa Hijazi’s artistic journey has spanned continents and cultures. After completing her studies in the Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus in 2000, she furthered her education in Mass Communication and Media at the same university, graduating in 2008. This unique combination of artistic training and media studies has given Hijazi a distinctive perspective, allowing her to approach her work with both the eye of a photojournalist and the heart of an artist.
Having moved from Syria to Dubai, and eventually settling in Laval, Quebec in 2017, Hijazi’s experiences have deeply influenced her art. Her works often explore the cultural connections between her memories of the Orient and the ever-evolving Western civilization. Through her art, she sheds light on critical humanitarian issues such as injustice, poverty, and exclusion, all presented in a harmonious and unique style that has earned her recognition from critics, art historians, and collectors alike.
Hijazi’s latest project, completed and signed 2023, “TIMELESS TALES: Artistic Narratives of Canada’s Rich Heritage,” is an ambitious and monumental oil painting on canvas, measuring 900 by 450 cm. This mural encapsulates the vast and diverse history of Canada, from its founding to the present day. It features an impressive array of important Canadian historical figures, including Indigenous, French, and English heroes, leaders, artists, athletes, and scientists. These figures, who have played pivotal roles in shaping Canada, are depicted together in one grand hall, symbolizing the unity of their goals and their collective contribution to the nation’s development.
The creation of “TIMELESS TALES” has been a labor of love for Hijazi, spanning over four years of research, reading, and artistic endeavor. The result is a powerful visual narrative that not only celebrates Canada’s rich heritage but also serves as a testament to the enduring strength and unity of its people.
Randa Hijazi’s work has garnered numerous accolades throughout her career. Most recently, she was named Artist of the Year 2024 in an international competition in France. In 2023, she received the International Medal of Merit, the highest honor from the International Lions Clubs during their Annual Gala in Laval, Quebec. Her other awards include the Golden Medal in Art from the Leonardo Da Vinci Gallery and the Circle of Painters and Sculptors of Quebec, a Certificate of Artistic Achievement from the Luxembourg Museum, and a recognition award from the International Lions Clubs in Oak Brook, Illinois.
Hijazi’s art has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Dubai, Lebanon, Canada, France, and Syria, and her work continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
As London Waterloo Station prepares to host this extraordinary event on August 23rd, Randa Hijazi’s “TIMELESS TALES” stands as a poignant reminder of the power of art to unite, inspire, and celebrate the diverse tapestry of human history.
