“A Poetic Dialogue Across Time”: Cultural Figures Visit Tianzhushan

In the fairyland of Wanyuan, amidst the poetic landscapes of Tianzhushan, a cultural event titled “A Poetic Dialogue Across Time” took place from August 5 to 7. Prominent cultural figures from across the country gathered at the Tianzhushan tourist attraction in Anhui Province, delving into the exploration and utilization of cultural heritage to empower the development of Tianzhushan’s cultural and tourism sectors.

The event was hosted by the Tianzhushan Scenic Area Management Committee, co-organized by Anhui Tianzhushan Tourism Development Co., Ltd., and guided by the News Information Center of Xinhua News Agency. A series of activities were conducted, including visits to Tianzhushan, poetry sharing sessions by renowned poets, and elegant poetry reading gatherings.

“Tianzhushan’s stones speak of ancient times, and the streams in the valleys recite poems, narrating the legends of scholars and literati,” said Shu Hanbing, a member of the Standing Committee of the Qianshan City Committee and Deputy Director of the Tianzhushan Scenic Area Management Committee. He further explained that Tianzhushan is a significant birthplace of Anhui culture. From the creation of China’s first long narrative poem The Peacock Flies Southeast to Li Bai’s deep affection for Tianzhushan as he gazed upon it from the Yangtze River, from Emperor Tang Minghuang’s dream journey to Qianshan, to Wang Anshi’s night tour by torchlight through the mountain valleys, ancient scholars have created brilliant poetic works in the Tianzhushan region, greatly enriching the tradition of harmonious integration with nature, expressing emotions through landscapes, and wandering the world in poetic contemplation.

During the event, the cultural figures explored the path from Hutou Cliff to the peak of Tianzhushan, observing cliff inscriptions, appreciating the elegance of ancient scholars, experiencing the stunning scenery of Tianzhushan, and immersing themselves in the historical and cultural heritage of the area.

At the picturesque Liandan Lake, these cultural figures engaged in “A Poetic Dialogue Across Time”—a poetry sharing session at Tianzhushan. Notable participants included Li Dingguang, the academic head of the CCTV program Chinese Poetry Conference and literary consultant for Poetic China; Cai Shiping, a first-class writer and director of the Chinese Institute of Contemporary Poetry; Wang Ke, a doctoral supervisor at Southeast University and director of the Institute of Modern Chinese Poetry; Wu Zhongsheng, academic dean of the School of Culture and Tourism at Zhejiang International Studies University; Han Pugeng, editor-in-chief of Yuejiang Journal; Han Kesheng, director of the All-China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Reading Committee; and Xu Xun, vice president of the Chinese Essay Society. They gathered to share their experiences of visiting Tianzhushan, discussing the importance of exploring, protecting, and passing on the mountain’s rich cultural heritage. Their exchanges sparked ideas and explored new pathways for integrating culture and tourism in Tianzhushan.

During the poetry reading gathering, cultural figures, along with local elementary school students and tourists, embarked on a summer poetry journey, engaging in poetry relays, poetry riddles, and a fierce Flying Flower Order competition. Through timeless classic verses, participants encountered the elegance of literati and tasted the poetic essence of Tianzhushan.

Among the majestic peaks and misty clouds, as the ancient poets once did, we leave behind verses for the ages. Shu Hanbing expressed that the next step for Tianzhushan will involve organizing extensive research on Tianzhushan’s poetry, innovating activities, expanding platform channels, and promoting the poetic and pictorial beauty of Tianzhushan to the world. The aim is to make Tianzhushan a global destination for poetry and distant places, leverage the mountain’s platform advantages to gather talent from around the world, and promote the flourishing of contemporary landscape poetry. Additionally, efforts will be made to guide and support community-based poetry activities, contributing Tianzhushan’s strength to building a strong tourism nation and a poetic China.
