In ‘Imogen’s Quest,’ the author, John Campbell Rees, allows the readers to immerse in a universe where justice, bravery, and identity intersect. This compelling story takes readers to the planet Anseris, where a kingdom’s fate is at stake. The protagonist of the story is Imogen, once Princess Louise, whose memory loss causes her life to take an unexpected turn.
After changing into Imogen, the Royal Goose-keeper, she sets off on a quest for self-discovery in a culture that is firmly rooted in strict hierarchy and pervasive inequality. The story takes place in the world of Anseris, where strong rulers dominate, and follows Imogen as she struggles against the harsh government that has taken hold of her country.
Beyond simply taking back her rightful seat as queen, her purpose is one of justice and redemption, seeking to restore order after the oppressive Queen Kathyren’s devastation. Inspired by the classic folktale ‘The Goose Girl,’ the author skillfully combines science fiction and fantasy elements to create a story that speaks to themes of identity, treachery, and the never-ending quest for freedom. Imogen’s journey echoes the ongoing struggle between good and evil and represents hope and rejuvenation.
Readers see the harsh reality of Anserian society — a civilization in which people are obligated by birthright to conform to predetermined roles — through Imogen’s eyes. Her fearless refusal to back down reveals the wrongdoings of the ruling class and sparks a passionate movement for equality and reform. More than just an adventure story, ‘Imogen’s Quest’ is a monument to the human spirit’s tenacity in the face of difficulty. Imogen’s tale becomes a ray of hope for a better future on Anseris as she bravely sails across perilous waters to free her people and save her cousin Anita.
John Campbell skillfully crafts a plot that captivates readers from the opening to the last page, showcasing his literary prowess. Rees captivates readers with her vivid words and engaging characters, taking them on a remarkable journey full of turns and tragic truths.

About the Author:
John Campbell Rees was born in the Rhondda, South Wales, in 1967. He had a normal childhood, however at the age of twelve he was diagnosed with Dyspraxia. This has been a big influence on his life, but he has not allowed it to limit him in anyway. Despite one of his former headmasters saying he would never achieve any formal qualifications, in 2005, he attained a BSc (Hons.) Degree from the University of Glamorgan, as a part time student.
Unlike many authors, who have had many jobs before settling down to write their first novel, John has always loved books and reading. He was a Library assistant from leaving college in 1988 until his retirement in 2023. For twenty three of those years he worked in the branch library in his hometown of Treherbert.
John has always been a fan of Science Fiction, naturally choosing to write in that genre.
Other interests include:
- A life-long fascination with Politics at a local, national and international level.
- John is widely traveled. Over the years he has scaled the great pyramid in Chitzen Itza in Mexico, when that was still allowed. Been down in a mini submarine of the coast of Barbados. He Para-glided over the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria, during the last year of Communist rule.
- John was never a sportsman, but he enjoys being a spectator. As a Welshman he loves watching Rugby Union, but also follows Rugby League.
- John has always been fascinated by technology and gadgets. In 1992 he had a chance to travel in one of the first cars to use satellite navigation. The equipment filled the trunk of the car and the satellite receiver was the size of a pint glass, things have certainly changed.
John is single and currently lives in the house he grew up in, having moved home during the pandemic.
