On July 27th, the second “Gorgeous Baiyu: Grassland Livestock Carnival” rural folk culture activities of Baiyu County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, kicked off at Ritong Grassland in Acha Town.

At the opening ceremony, majestic horses and beautifully adorned yaks elicited continuous applause and cheers from the audience, creating a vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere throughout the activities.
The opening ceremony unveiled around three themes: “Gorgeous Baiyu: The Beauty of Intangible Cultural Heritage”, “Gorgeous Baiyu: A Song of the Wild”, and “Gorgeous Baiyu: Praise from the Grassland”. These themes vividly showcased Baiyu County’s rich cultural heritage and magnificent natural landscape.
The activities will run from July 27th to 28th. During this event, activities will include “off-site exchanges of high-quality male yaks”, “milking competitions”, “beauty pageants of yaks”, “horse races”, “trade fairs”, and “cloud races”.
“We hope the activities will strengthen the local herdsmen’s pride and identity with the Changtai yak brand, while also advancing the development of “cattle industry chips” of Changtai yaks. This will provide a significant boost to economic transformation, upgrading, and rural revitalization,” stated by a relevant head from the People’s Government of Baiyu County.
It is learned that Changtai yaks in Baiyu County, recognized as a unique and high-quality resource, has garnered significant attention since passing the on-site appraisal by the National Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Committee in 2016. In recent years, Baiyu County has leveraged the advantages of Changtai yaks’ superior varieties, adopting a strategy of differentiated and complementary development. The county has actively cultivated the “Yak Ganzi” cattle industry chips, establishing a solid foundation for the growth of the yak industry.
Additionally, Baiyu County has consistently increased investment in scientific research, strengthened technical support, and continuously optimized yak varieties, so as to steadily improve product quality. These efforts have yielded significant results, enhancing the economic income of local herdsmen and boosting social well-being. Today, Baiyu County is making steady progress in developing an industrial cluster of the competitive and characteristic yak industry. “Changtai Yaks” have evolved into a prominent local asset, attracting numerous tourists and investors and infusing new vitality into the region’s economic development.
Baiyu County has maintained its reputation as the “sea of forests on the banks of the Jinsha River and gorgeous Baiyu”. It is part of the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province and is renowned for its splendid landscape and profound culture. As a hidden gem, Baiyu County has won the title of “an exquisite piece of jade along the Chengdu-Lhasa Highway”.
