Oakland, CA – Renowned author Dennis Wong, a resident of Oakland and a dedicated Certified Nurse Assistant, has released his new memoir, The Apricot Outlook Of Katherine Koon Hung Wong. This heartfelt book delves into his rich family history, personal experiences, and the indomitable spirit of his lineage.
Born in 1951 at Kapiolani Hospital in Honolulu, Oahu, Wong’s early life was marked by a significant move to San Francisco in 1958, just one year before Hawaii became the 50th state. A fascinating piece of history he discovered during a visit to his birthplace was that, during World War II, the hospital’s Labor and Delivery department was located in the basement to protect mothers and babies from potential bombings. This profound connection to his birthplace has always resonated with Wong.
Wong, the eldest of six children and the first grandchild to carry on the Wong name, pursued an extensive educational path. He holds a BS degree in Business Management with a focus on Personnel and Industrial Relations from California State University, Hayward, and an AA degree in Retail Marketing from Chabot College, Hayward. His diverse career spans over decades, including 34 years in the paint industry with companies like Sherwin Williams, Glidden Paint, and Fuller O’Brien Paint. Additionally, he served as a security guard for eight years, retaining a current security guard card, and worked as a newspaper boy for a decade.
For the past 14 years, Wong has been a Certified Nurse Assistant in the Operating Room department at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Oakland, CA. He also dedicates his weekends to home health care, providing services to clients as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
His journey has not been confined to the United States. Wong has participated in several surgical missions to Guatemala and Ecuador, serving as a Sterile Processing Technician, bringing his skills and compassion to those in need.
Wong’s interest in genealogy began in 1972, inspired by a letter from his grandfather, Leonard Wong. This passion has driven him to trace his family roots, leading to a planned visit to his great grandparents’ villages in China in October 2018.
A poignant moment in Wong’s life occurred during the American Cancer Society’s 24-hour Relay for Life walkathon in July 2014. After walking continuously for 15 hours, completing 200 laps, Wong received a call informing him of his mother’s passing. This event, among many others, is a testament to the resilience and dedication that marks his life and career.
The Apricot Outlook Of Katherine Koon Hung Wong is available on Amazon. This memoir offers readers a window into the rich tapestry of Wong’s life, from his professional journey to his personal endeavors and the deep love and respect he holds for his family’s legacy.
