Breaking Into History: Bastrop Competition Celebrates BreakDance’s Olympic Debut

On Saturday, August 17th, dancers from across Central Texas will converge into Bastrop to do what they do best…battle! Where will they battle? Bastrop Baila and Beats; an inaugural event funded by a grant from the Bastrop Cultural Arts Commission. Baila and Beats is a free one-day celebration, exhibition and competition taking place at the Fay Performing Arts Center. This event is hosted by Bastrop local Patrick “Pac Man” Perez in partnership with Bastrop County Cares, Dance Across Austin and Mindpop!

Bastrop Baila and Beats will feature an immersive dance panel discussion where dancers from various backgrounds, abilities and styles will share how dance helps shape their identity, foster community and build resilience. Each guest dancer will showcase their dancing (some to classical music), teach a few moves to attendees and take questions.

Expect to see Popping, Krumping, Breaking and more! Spanish translation and ASL interpretation services will be on- site for the panel discussion.

Event founder Perez emphasizes, “This event celebrates our differences and the unique style our differences bring to dance. There’s flavor and flare in our differences… that’s power! Plus, Breaking is finally in the Olympics! It’s about time!”

Following the discussion panel will be a 1 vs 1 Breaking competition (“Breaking” being the correct term instead of “Break Dance”) and a 1 vs 1 All Styles competition (All Styles meaning any style of dance.) Competitors, guest dancers and judges from Bastrop, Austin, San Antonio and surrounding areas will be in attendance .

AJ Abrams (better known by his DJ name AceThunda in San Antonio) will be bringing the music to the battles. “I like how this event makes it a point to give every person a voice.”

With Breaking making it’s historical Olympic Debut August 9th and 10th, Bastrop Baila and Beats will kick off a line-up of Breaking events across Texas, including B-Boy City in Austin and Ritual Warfare in Dallas.

“We’re thrilled Breaking is receiving this recognition,” says Perez, “It’s a shoutout to B-Boys and B Girls worldwide who’ve kept this culture alive.”

Baila and Beats is free to attend, spectate and compete. The dance panel will be from 11am-12:30pm followed by the battles 1pm-6pm (prelims starting at 2 pm) on Saturday August 17th at The Performing Arts Center (1401 Cedar St, Bastrop, TX 78602).
