Tell us about Amara On Safari.
Set in the heart of the African Savanna, Amara On Safari follows a globe-trotting, seafaring Bengal cat named Amara. When she learns that a Mother Leopard has lost her cub, Amara sets off on an exciting mission to help her find the cub before the hyenas do! With the help of her animal friends, Amara shows courage, determination and ingenuity in helping reunite the cub with her mother.
Perfect for children ages 4-7, Amara On Safari is a thrilling journey that showcases how friendship and teamwork can conquer any challenge. The book also introduces readers to some of the amazing wildlife of Africa. Beyond lions, zebras and giraffes, Amara encounters exotic, lesser-known animals like caracal cats and vervet monkeys.
The end of the book features a Fun Facts section about some of the animals Amara encounters to bring the book’s ideas and themes out of the intangible into real life. This brings the fun back into learning in a way that will stay in young readers’ hearts and minds, long after they finish the book.
What inspired you to write Amara On Safari?
As a child, I always had cats and loved to read.
After graduating college, I worked for 35 years in my pharmacy profession. I am now retired and pursuing my love for writing, especially children’s picture books.
My adorable Bengal cat, Amara, inspired me to write my first children’s picture book, Amara Sets Sail. I look forward to continuing Amara’s heartwarming adventures to teach children important lessons about life and the beautiful world in which they live!
How did your background and experience influence your writing?
My husband and I both love to travel. So far, we have traveled to 122 countries…and counting!
I also have a deep love for and appreciation of animals and nature.
My books combine both of these passions and are designed to share some of my experiences with children to help broaden their worldview and encourage them to explore different places around the world as well.
What is one message you would like readers to remember?
We live in an incredible world filled with diverse animals, people, cultures, landscapes and ways of doing things. Through my work, I hope young readers develop a genuine appreciation for the world and its inhabitants, and to spark their curiosity, imagination and desire to travel and explore.
