Honduras Launches First-Ever Professional Women’s Basketball League: Liga Profesional de Baloncesto Femenino (LPBF)

The landscape of women’s sports in Honduras has reached an exciting new milestone with the official launch of the Liga Profesional de Baloncesto Femenino (LPBF) in late May 2024. This groundbreaking league aims to elevate the level of basketball and provide women with the opportunity to compete professionally in Honduras.

The LPBF comprises four teams, all based in the capital city of Tegucigalpa; Teguz 504, Nacional de Ingenieros, Teguz Juvenil, and Tune Squad. The league was established to meet the growing demand for high-level basketball and to create professional opportunities for female athletes in the region. The LPBF’s mission is to foster talent, promote competitive sports, and inspire future generations of women basketball players.

Ankara Reichle, a shooting guard for Teguz 504 and a prominent player on the Honduran women’s National Team, expressed her enthusiasm for the league’s potential impact. “As a professional player, this league is important to elevate the level of the local players in order to compete internationally. Also, it gives women the platform to show their abilities and put on a show for the fans.”

The LPBF has garnered significant support from Royal Heir Entertainment, an American company known for its dedication to promoting sports and entertainment. CEO Brian Essince Collins is a Honduran-born award-winning music marketer and professional sports team owner in the USA. He emphasized the league’s importance for the future of women’s sports in Honduras. “I’ve always looked for ways to give back to Honduras and, more recently, do it through sports. I love seeing the work Hondubasket is doing to develop the women’s game and the next generation of players. The birth of the LPBF has been really exciting to see and I’m honored to be involved.”

The launch of the LPBF marks a significant step forward for women’s sports in Honduras, promising to deliver high-quality basketball action and to cultivate a new generation of female athletes. The league’s formation is a testament to the growing popularity and support for women’s sports, and it stands as a beacon of progress and opportunity.
