Collaborative Practice in California (CPCal) inducted a new President and a new Board member from LACFLA members and presented the Eureka Award to a LACFLA member at the annual CPCal Celebration.
Celebration XVIII Navigating the Turbulent Waters took place in Redondo Beach this year, and provided experts from around the country to the conference for education, networking and plenty of good times. Participants report CPCal conferences provide a wealth of information and opportunity that is rarely found elsewhere.
“Celebration XVIII – Navigating the Turbulent Waters – was a remarkable event, highlighting the strength and unity of the Collaborative Practice community in California,” said Jena Stara, President of LACFLA. “We are thrilled to have the incoming CPCal President and a Board member from LACFLA, whose dedication and vision will undoubtedly provide dynamic leadership. This year’s conference not only provided invaluable education and networking opportunities but also honored our very own LACFLA member, Dr. James Walton, with the prestigious Eureka Award.”
NEW PRESIDENT
Leslie Howell is the new CP Cal President, and is also a LACFLA board member. Ms. Howell is a collaborative lawyer and mediator whose firm, Amicable Divorce Services, APLC, is located in Pasadena, although she has worked with couples throughout California for 22 years.
“I am excited to be the president of CP Cal, and to work with such a dedicated and energetic Board of Directors. I’m thrilled to bring LACFLA members into CP Cal’s sphere, and work with LACFLA members who had been involved with CP Cal before me. We’re already working on great ideas to realize in the next few months, that will make CP Cal a stronger organization in order to continue its mission to offer valuable information and services to the public, and to provide helpful tools to collaborative professionals,” she said.

EUREKA AWARD
Dr. James Walton, Ph.D., received the Eureka Award.
The Eureka Award recognizes and honors those who “have made significant contributions and demonstrated an abiding dedication to establishing and sustaining Collaborative Practice in California.” The award can go to anyone from a variety of careers.
This year’s recipient is Dr. James Walton, a Licensed Family Therapist with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He offers individual and couples counseling for all Californians from his office in Valley Glen. The office has in-person and telehealth counseling.
“James has developed programs and counseling methods for family law and divorce that have helped so many people get through the difficulties that come with legal separation,” Ms. Stara said. “He is absolutely deserving of this award.”
Dr. Walton said he is humbled by the award.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Eureka Award from CPCal this year. This recognition, which acknowledges significant contributions and dedication to Collaborative Practice in California, is incredibly meaningful to me,” said Dr. Walton. “My passion lies in helping individuals and couples navigate their personal journeys towards healing and growth. This award underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in fostering healthy relationships and communities. I extend my heartfelt thanks to CPCal.”

WARREN SACKS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
On Saturday evening, the Warren Sacks Scholarships were awarded to first time attendees. The annual Warren Sacks Memorial Scholarship was created in honor of our dear founding board member and treasurer, Warren Sacks. One of the factors considered in awarding the scholarship is diversity, since its sponsor, the Institute of Family Dispute Resolution (formerly CP Cal Foundation) is committed to promoting diversity among peacemakers and their collaborative clients. The two 2024 scholarship recipients were Sandy Pedram, Esq., LMFT, and Kenley Flanagan, a third-year law student who is preparing for her finals and the bar exam.
Participants consistently praise CPCal conferences for offering unparalleled insights and opportunities, and this year’s event was no exception. Together, the collaborative community continues to champion collaborative efforts that make a profound difference in the lives of families across California.
