Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Spearhead Strategic Dialogue between the US and Nigeria in Washington, DC
This working visit underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, fostering socioeconomic growth, and promoting democracy, regional integrity, and national interests.

Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is set to embark on a crucial diplomatic mission to Washington, DC from 12 May to 17 May 2024. This visit marks a significant milestone in the ongoing strategic dialogue between the United States and Nigeria, initiated by the 6th US-Nigeria Binational Commission (BNC).

The primary agenda of this diplomatic endeavour is to foster increased economic partnership and technical cooperation between the United States and Nigeria, while promoting Nigeria’s innovative foreign policy approach, the Tinubu 4D Doctrine. Under the visionary leadership of Honourable Minister Tuggar, this visit will encompass four key areas of focus: business and economic diplomacy, academic research and policy-focused think tanks, national and regional security, and engagement with the diaspora community.

Central to this visit is the promotion of the Tinubu 4D Doctrine, which revolves around the core principles of Demography, Development, Diaspora, and Democracy. This doctrine serves as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s foreign policy strategy, aimed at propelling the nation into the international spotlight.

During his stay in Washington, DC, H.E. Ambassador Tuggar will participate in several high-profile events, including media appearances on NBC’s Morning Joe and Voice of America. He will engage in substantive discussions regarding the US-Nigeria partnership in the evolving global landscape at the Wilson Centre, Centre for Global Development, US Chamber of Commerce and meet with the leadership of the National Endowment for Democracy. These engagements will provide a unique opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s diplomatic prowess and articulate the significance of the Tinubu 4D Doctrine on the global stage.

Furthermore, H.E. Ambassador Tuggar will engage the US Department of Treasury, Department of State, Department of Defence, US Agency for International Development (USAID), Senate Foreign Relations Committee, House Subcommittee on Africa, Congressional Black Caucasus, and other stakeholders. This will include dialogues on practical areas for technical cooperation and policy implications, following the recent 6th US-Nigeria Binational Commission (BNC) held in Abuja, Nigeria from April 29 to April 30. The BNC serves as a premier platform for strategic dialogue between the governments of the US and Nigeria, aimed at expanding cooperation and advancing shared goals.

Key outcomes of the recent BNC meeting include the announcement of a planned visit by the President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement to Nigeria in July, as well as discussions on a major symposium in Washington, DC in October to bring together American and Nigerian technology leaders.

This working visit underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, fostering socioeconomic growth, and promoting democracy, regional integrity, and national interests. H.E. Ambassador Minister Tuggar’s diplomatic efforts in Washington, DC are poised to chart a path towards enhanced cooperation and mutual prosperity between the United States and Nigeria.
