This one-on-one interview shares Shawn’s background and experience writing his latest book, What Science Really Says About God and the Supernatural.
Tell us about What Science Really Says About God and the Supernatural.
Have you ever felt like you were here for a reason? Like you are connected to something truly incredible, of which you may be a tiny, but important part?
While many people have been led to believe that science disproves the existence of divine or supernatural agency, if you have ever felt that there is more to life than an exclusively physical reality, you may be surprised to discover that research from astronomy, quantum physics, biology, neuropsychology and cosmology confirms your intuition.
With rigorous intellectual honesty and clarity, I lay before you current scientific research and important ideas from Christianity and Buddhism, to illuminate important concepts such as the origin of the universe, human DNA, consciousness, free will, criminal behavior, good vs. evil, salvation vs. enlightenment, resurrection or reincarnation, and more.
If you are searching for a deeper meaning behind your existence, I will show you how actual data supports your intuition that the universe, and everything in it, really is a miracle.
What inspired you to write What Science Really Says About God and the Supernatural?
My inspiration for writing What Science Really Says About God and the Supernatural was to use actual data to explain the how and why of our existence.
Today, there is a lot of misinformation about the nature of our reality.
Biologists often contend that the theory of evolution explains the origin of life. However, if you examine the recent research regarding the human DNA molecule, you will discover this claim is untrue.
Neuropsychologists claim that their research disproves the existence of free will. Yet, if you examine this research, you will also find this claim is untrue.
Many contemporary scientists are willing to misrepresent the implications of their work to persuade others that nothing exists in this universe other than physical matter.
My goal was to share actual recent data from intellectual, scientific and spiritual disciplines, so that readers could draw their own conclusions and come to understand that the presence of supernatural forces is more consistent with the data than a purely materialist explanation.
How did your background and experience influence your writing?
At the age of eight, I lost almost all of my eyesight. I can think of few events in life more likely to inspire a person to ask big questions such as, “Why Me?”
At the age of thirty-one, I began my career as a forensic psychologist, going on to evaluate thousands of criminal defendants. I can think of few careers more likely to inspire reflection on the nature of good and evil.
Since the 1960’s, I have listened to every talking book I could find regarding astronomy, biology, sociology, psychology, quantum physics and cosmology. This, combined with my training in psychological research and love for the scientific method prepared me well to decode the topics covered in this book.
As for the “Big Questions,” I cannot promise readers definitive answers. However, if there’s one thing that my life experiences and years of study have taught me, it is that each and every one of us is here for a reason.
What is one message you would like readers to remember?
There is something about you which appears to be built into the very fabric of the Universe. Your DNA, the blueprint for you, almost certainly originated from what we might call the mind of God in Christianity, or a cosmic consciousness in Buddhism.
Since everything we have ever studied scientifically has turned out to be infinitely more complex and more beautiful than initially imagined, the possibility of resurrection or reincarnation on a “higher” level of reality in this multidimensional universe seems entirely plausible.
So, if a supernatural agency exists and God or a cosmic consciousness brought forth your DNA and could most certainly do so again, the Christian concept of Heaven or the Buddhist concept of Nirvana may pale in comparison to what actually might be.
This life may only be the first step in the extraordinary journey that awaits you!
