Sparkling Charms Pediatric Dentistry Provides Comfortable and Sensitive Dental Care for Special Needs Children in Baltimore

Now taking patients, a new specialized dental practice is dedicated to treating people with autism, sensory sensitivities, and other special needs at the dentist

BALTIMORE – April 1, 2024 – Sparkling Charms, a newly opening pediatric dentist in Baltimore, today announced that it has the professional capability and mission of treating children with special needs.

There is a need for this service, as people on the autistic spectrum and those with other, comparable challenges, may struggle with dental care due to sensory processing issues and other negative reactions to the experience of being at the dentist’s office. The practice is accepting appointments. A “Family Party in the Park” grand opening celebration is scheduled for Riverside Park on June 2, 2024, from 12-4 pm.

The office provides expert, compassionate care for every unique young smile. Dr. Irene Spates is a caring professional who understands that not every child is the same. She respects the true value of family support and hopes to be part of a child’s long-term health plan. Staff provide empathetic and personalized care, accommodating patients with diverse conditions and diagnoses in a supportive dental environment.

“We are proud to announce the grand opening of Sparkling Charms as a new special needs and pediatric dentistry practice. Baltimore and Maryland parents have few options and support when searching for special needs dental care. We provide gentle and enjoyable experience, as a result of our specialized training and experience, as well as our heartfelt commitment to our patients.” said Dr. Spates.

According to the National Institute of Health, children with special needs “have a significantly higher burden of oral diseases because of the lack of oral health knowledge, access to care and preventive measures.” Children with autism and other spectrum disorders are also prone to greater stress and anxiety at the dentist. Providers can be dismissive or not have adequate training to manage situations that might not happen with “neurotypical” children.

Dr. Spates continued, “Our prime objective is to establish a positive, supportive dental home, where you and your child can relax and have confidence in the quality of care. Our skilled pediatric dentistry team is gentle and flexible. Patient-focused dental treatments ensure your child’s comfort and well-being throughout the visit. We are sensitive to a child’s needs to take a break, or stop and come back on another day. We empathetically work with each family to ensure the best possible experience and outcome.”
