In a forward-looking assertion, Kunwer Sachdev, founder of Su-kam, has predicted a significant shift in the Indian battery market, with lithium batteries set to replace lead-acid batteries within the next five years. This perspective emerged from Sachdev’s conversation with Nitisha from EFY, where he detailed the current landscape and prospects of the lithium battery sector in India.
Impending Market Shift
Kunwer Sachdev believes the Indian market is on the cusp of a transformation. While lead-acid batteries have long been the leading energy storage solution for the nation, they are likely to be phased out by 2028. The key reason behind this impending shift is the emergence of lithium batteries, which offer a maintenance-free nature, compact size, lightweight, and a lifespan three times longer than their lead-acid battery counterparts.
Industry Challenges
However, the journey towards this transition is not without its challenges. Sachdev pointed out that players with limited knowledge and experience mar the current market. Many rely on importing cells and battery management systems (BMS) from China, resulting in products that fall short of meeting the specific demands of the Indian environment.
Su-vastika’s Unique Approach
To counter these challenges, Su-vastika Systems has created its own BMS tailored for Inverters/UPS and solar systems in India. This approach deviates from Chinese models, ensuring the products are well-suited to local conditions. The Inverter market is dominated in the world by India, for which the credit goes to Mr Sachdev, who is known as the architect of the Inverter Industry and is called the Inverter Man of India. He played a major role in bringing much innovation to the Indian Inverter and solar industry and filed the highest Technology patents in this field. So he has been instrumental in devising the BMS for Lithium battery, which is the best suited for the Inverters and Solar PCU industry. As per him, the cost of Lithium batteries is falling after the COVID-19 impact is over. So, the cost parity with the Lead Acid prices will occur in the next 12 to 18 months, hitting the backbone of the Lead Acid battery industry.
India’s Road to Self-Reliance
Sachdev also highlighted the Indian government’s role in fostering the growth of the lithium battery industry. Through policies and subsidies, the government encourages local manufacturing, which Sachdev believes is key to India’s self-reliance in this sector. However, he acknowledges that reaching this goal could take five to seven years, given China’s current lead in the industry.
Sustainability and Innovation at Su-vastika
Focusing on sustainability, Su-vastika Systems is integrating solar energy and battery storage in its operations. The company, known for its Heavy Duty Inverters, UPS and Battery Energy Storage systems and specialising in Lift Inverters with Lithium batteries, complete product range of products and IoT capabilities, is now aggressively targeting the domestic market while maintaining its export-oriented approach.
Kunwer Sachdev’s insights offer a glimpse into the future of battery technology in India and Su-vastika Systems’ role in navigating this evolving landscape.
