Tianzi Chang’an Chime Bells Laid at Xi’an International University

The large-scale cast bronze chime bells, “Tianzi Chang’an”, was made public at Xi’an International University (XAIU) in the ancient capital city, Xi’an, China. The set is the largest traditional Chinese ritual and musical instrument ever manufactured in China: it has the best timbres, and the widest volume range of tones being performed by the living chime bells.

The production of the set followed the Zhou Dynasty’s rites and music system that contains 111 articles of bronze chime bells. The dual-pitch chime bells have a volume range of G1 – F8: it is three-note lower than the lowest note of existing chime bells and three-note higher than the highest note of piano. With the intonation level of modern musical Instruments, the set extends the repertoire to some more complicated music pieces newly created and makes a significant breakthrough in timbre, thus producing better instrumental ensembles ever.

Prof. Huang Teng, the president of XAIU, worked as the chief designer of the set during its ten years of manufacturing from the initial proposal to the finishing touch. To accommodate the gorgeous chime giant, XAIU has built a new theater for its professional ensemble members to search, collect and compose the lost ancient music pieces. As a symbol of traditional Chinese culture, the music of chime bells tells the beliefs and values of peace, friendship and harmony of Chinese people.
