A border post at a “Belt and Road” wind gap

Alashankou is windswept all year round, with only rocks on the ground and no birds flying in the sky. In the old days, it was said to be a lonely border post on the Silk Road. What greeted travelling merchants was only raging sandstorms. At present, the important post on the ancient Silk Road has turned into a vital “window” along the Belt and Road.

Chen Wei, safety technician of the cargo loading workshop at Alashankou Station of Urumqi Railway Bureau, is busy with reloading freight trains and coordinating with the port as for customs clearance. He’s been working here for over ten years and witnessed the increase of the number of freight trains and how the city has gradually flourished.

As the Belt and Road Initiative was unveiled, the number of China-Europe freight trains leaving and entering China via Alashankou has been increasing day by day, accounting for about 70% of the total number of freight trains in operation. Currently, a daily average of 17 freight trains cross Alashankou Port, covering 25 domestic regions and cities and reaching 19 foreign countries, including Germany, Poland and others.

Nowadays, Alashankou has become a busy land port-of-entry by railway, highway, pipeline and aviation. At the forefront of the Belt and Road Initiative, Alashankou acts as both a “golden channel” for the “steel camel fleet” and a major path for national important energy sources, playing an irreplaceable role in China’s opening to the west and the Silk Road Economic Belt.
