The 1st ASEAN-China Week Opens in Fuzhou

The ASEAN-China Week 2023 grandly opened in Fuzhou, Fujian on August 6. Around 200 people attended the opening ceremony, including representatives of China and ASEAN countries, representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, diplomatic envoys of ASEAN countries to China, and representatives of businesses and international students.

Co-sponsored by the ASEAN-China Center, the Foreign Affairs Office of the Fujian Provincial People’s Government, and the Fuzhou Municipal People’s Government, the event aims to enhance mutual understanding and appreciation between China and ASEAN countries, present the achievements of bilateral cooperation and development, and further deepen cultural and people-to-people exchanges and economic and trade cooperation, helping build a closer ASEAN-China community with a shared future.

Zhao Long, Governor of Fujian Province, said in his speech at the opening ceremony that Fujian and ASEAN countries have profound historical and cultural ties and enjoy a good foundation, huge potential, and vast space for cooperation in various fields. Fujian stands ready to work with all parties to enhance quality and performance of economic and trade cooperation, explore the mode of international division of labor and cooperation, and continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation in Friendship Cities, overseas Chinese affairs, culture and tourism, education, and other areas.

Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Nong Rong said that friends in Southeast Asia often say that when water rises, the lotus rises with it. China will always pursue a neighborhood diplomacy of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness, standing ready to carry out win-win cooperation with ASEAN and join hands to build a closer ASEAN-China community with a shared future, so as to achieve common development and promote long-term peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

Sommad Pholsena, Vice President of the Lao National Assembly

“Laos and China are committed to strengthening regional integration and connectivity, and the Laos-China Railway is an important project of landmark significance in this regard. With the railway, the mountains are no longer high and the road is no longer long between the two counties.” said Sommad Pholsena, Vice President of the Lao National Assembly, adding that it also indicates the strong momentum of practical cooperation between Laos and China and between ASEAN and China.

Khairul Firdaus, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture of Malaysia

The“Ong Chun (Sending the King Ship) ceremony, rituals and related practices for maintaining the sustainable connection between man and the ocean” jointly declared by China and Malaysia has been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Khairul Firdaus, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture of Malaysia, said that Malaysia and China complement each other in tourism cooperation with fruitful cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and Malaysia will carry out more cultural exchange projects with China in the future to jointly promote the cultural prosperity and development of both sides.

It is learned that the ASEAN-China Week will last until August 11. A series of activities will be held, including the themed forum A Forward-looking ASEAN-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the New Era, ASEAN-China (Fujian) Forum on Trade and Investment Cooperation, ASEAN-China Symphonic Concert: The Legend of Maritime Silk Road, Youth Forum, Film Week, and Gourmet Carnival.

Shi Zhongjun, Secretary-General of the ASEAN-China Center, said that by holding a series of ASEAN-China Week activities, the center hopes to continuously consolidate the bonds of friendship between the two sides, promote the realization of the common goals of both sides, and push forward the all-round, high-quality, and sustainable development of the ASEAN-China comprehensive strategic partnership.
